A hard-labor (katorga) prison complex on the Kara River in Transbaikalia, eastern Siberia, distinct from the river-crossing settlement of Ust-Kara that Chekhov passed through en route to Sakhalin; named here as the birthplace of an unnamed ten-year-old boy Chekhov interviewed during his Sakhalin census, born to his mother while she was held there.
