A real village/settlement in the steppe north of Taganrog; the old shepherd recalls that an Armenian talisman-seller lived there around 1838, from whom his brother Ilya bought the talisman he hoped would let him reach a spellbound treasure in the Taganrog fortress.

Armenian merchants and traders were a long-established presence in the trade towns of southern Russia and the Don region (including nearby Nakhichevan-on-Don, a historic Armenian settlement); the detail that Ilya's talisman-seller was Armenian reflects this real regional demographic rather than being a random ethnic marker, and lends the transaction a plausible, non-fantastical texture even as the talisman itself belongs to folk magic.
