A town at the mouth of the Amur River in the Russian Far East; in Chekhov's account of a Sakhalin funeral, the dead woman's husband -- a settler -- had gone off to Nikolayevsk, leaving her two small children to be looked after by a pitying convict woman and an indifferent lodger.
