The first of two informal-doctoring anecdotes closing the letter: Chekhov, traveling as a physician among people who do not know he intends to stop practicing medicine on this trip, is drawn into treating a gold prospector's pregnant wife at Reinovo. The comic back-and-forth over payment (each man insisting he is too rich to need the other's money) ends with Chekhov unable to fully refuse -- he leaves with 15 rubles anyway.
