A river of Transbaikalia and a headwater tributary of the Amur, down which Chekhov traveled by steamer from Sretensk; the letter is dated and re-dated from a point on the river below Gorbitsa, and its closing image -- beautiful but oppressively empty banks, "a cage without a bird" -- is set on this stretch.
