Reading notes
- The Requiem §31 the punishment of Sodom
Genesis 19: God's destruction of Sodom for its wickedness, sparing only Lot's family. Paired here with Esau's lentils and Joseph's sufferings as the frightening, memorable Bible stories a shopkeeper-turned-father used to hold his daughter's attention.
- To A. I. Urusov, 3 May 1891. Moscow. §3 Sodom and Gomorrah
The biblical cities destroyed for their wickedness (Genesis 19), here used purely as comic hyperbole for a whirlwind spring tour of Italy, Paris, Nice, Berlin, and Vienna -- a self-mocking label for a trip whose only vice, per the next sentence, was a glimpse of undressed women in Paris.
