A crown (state-owned) forest past Sukhorukovo, leased to merchants for charcoal-burning, where the isolated forester's cottage stands; Anyutka reaches it after fleeing through the woods, and it is the site of the robbers' drunken carousing and the murder of the forester's daughter.

"Казенный лес" (crown/state forest) was forest land owned directly by the Imperial treasury rather than by a private landowner; the detail that merchants leased sections of it to burn charcoal (a common rural industry supplying fuel to ironworks and smithies) explains why a forester's cottage -- staffed to guard and manage state timber -- would be isolated out in these woods, remote enough that Anyutka wanders lost for a day reaching it and the murder that follows goes unheard by anyone else.
