A settlement on Sakhalin Island where Chekhov conducted his household census in 1890; the settlers there were, in his account, paupers reputed to be desperate players at shtoss, and it is the setting of his transcribed interview with a ten-year-old boy about his parentage, reported in his letter to Koni of 26 January 1891.
