Françoise
"Françoise"
also: Франсуаза
A short story ("Françoise") that ran in the same Novoye Vremya issue as Suvorin's article on Tolstoy, which Chekhov praises here; he notes that an addition about the heroine's sister ("she is your sister!"), made by Tolstoy, cost the story some of its freshness though did not spoil it as badly as Suvorin had feared. Widely attributed to Guy de Maupassant, whose short fiction Novoye Vremya regularly translated and ran in this period, though the letter itself does not name the author.

- To A. S. Suvorin, 6 February 1891. Moscow. §9 "Françoise"
A short story running in the same Novoye Vremya issue as Suvorin's article on Tolstoy; widely attributed to Guy de Maupassant, whose stories the paper regularly translated and printed in this period, though Chekhov does not name the author here. Tolstoy is said to have added a line about the heroine's sister ("she is your sister!"), which Chekhov judges cost the story some freshness without spoiling it as badly as Suvorin had feared.
