The Golovlyov Family (Господа Головлёвы)

The Golovlyov Family

also: Gospoda Golovlyovy, Little Judas

Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin's 1880 novel anatomizing the moral and material decay of a landowning family, centered on its hypocritical, unctuously pious heir Porfiry "Little Judas" (Iudushka) Golovlyov, whose obsequious, God-invoking speech became a byword in Russian for sanctimonious cant; Laptev privately compares his brother Fyodor's new, folksy-devout manner of speaking ("brother, dear brother, God has sent his mercy") to Little Judas's.
