Mimochka at the Waters
"Mimochka at the Waters"
also: Мимочка на водах, Mimochka na vodakh
A popular novella by Lidiya Veselitskaya, published under her pen name V. Mikulich, about a fashionable young woman's life at a spa; Chekhov admits he has not read it and, going only on Suvorin's review and quoted excerpts, guesses it is more ornate and mannered than brilliant -- a judgment he flags as colored by his own envy.
Reading notes
- To Ye. M. Shavrova, 20 June 1891. Bogimovo. §4 I have not read "Mimochka at the Waters."
A popular novella of the moment; Chekhov admits he has not read it and relies entirely on Suvorin's secondhand report and quoted excerpts for his opinion.
- To Ye. M. Shavrova, 20 June 1891. Bogimovo. §5 any Mimochkas
Chekhov puns on the novella's title, using "Mimochkas" as a generic plural for fashionable spa-going women of the kind the book depicts, playfully declining to chase after them at a resort this summer.
