A story or manuscript character named "Vasilisa" sent to Chekhov by Maria Vladimirovna Kiseleva for comment; he declines it with a dry joke that in it "life and the mind are one and the same." Distinct from Vasilisa Kiseleva, the real daughter of Alexei Sergeyevich and Maria Vladimirovna Kiselev, whom Chekhov elsewhere greets affectionately in his letters.
