Headnote
"A Drunk Man’s Conversation with a Sober Devil" dates from 1885, when Chekhov was still writing comic sketches for the Petersburg and Moscow humor weeklies under the pen name Antosha Chekhonte. The premise is a familiar Russian folk-comic device – a devil who appears, uninvited, to a man deep in his cups – but Chekhov’s devil is no tempter out of legend. He is a minor civil servant of hell, an "official for special assignments" in Satan’s chancellery, who confesses over a glass of vodka that temptation itself has become obsolete: people have grown too clever, too well-educated, and too capable of sin without any infernal encouragement, so the devils have been reduced to petty mischief and unpaid, "supernumerary" employment, surviving on bribes like the human bureaucrats they used to corrupt.
The joke is bureaucratic rather than supernatural, in keeping with Chekhov’s early habit of running any subject – heaven, hell, marriage, the theater – through the deadening machinery of Russian officialdom: job titles, salaries, "the staff," newspaper contributions. The devil’s admission that former devils have "gone into people," married rich merchants’ widows, and taken up law or journalism is a glancing satire of the Moscow professional classes of the 1880s.

1 A former official of the commissariat administration, retired
collegiate secretary Lakhmatov, was sitting at his table and, downing his sixteenth glass, was pondering on
brotherhood, equality, and freedom. Suddenly, from behind the lamp, a
devil peeped out at him... But do not be frightened, dear reader. Do you know what a devil is? He is a young man of pleasant appearance, with a mug as black as boots and expressive red eyes. On his head, though he is not married, are little horns... His hairstyle is à la
Capoul. His body is covered in green fur and smells of dog. Below his back dangles a tail, ending in an arrowhead... In place of fingers he has claws, in place of legs, horse’s hooves. Lakhmatov, seeing
the devil, was somewhat taken aback, but then, recalling that green devils have the foolish habit of appearing to all manner of tipsy people in general, soon calmed down.
2 "With whom do I have the honor of speaking?" he addressed the uninvited guest.
3 The devil grew embarrassed and cast down his little eyes.
4 "Don’t be shy," Lakhmatov went on. "Come closer... I am a man without prejudices, and you may speak to me sincerely... from the heart... Who are you?"
5 The devil approached Lakhmatov irresolutely and, tucking his tail beneath him, bowed politely.
6 "I am a devil, or demon..." he introduced himself. "I hold the post of official for special assignments to His Excellency the
director of the infernal chancellery,
Mister Satan!"
7 "I’ve heard of it, heard of it... Very pleased to meet you. Sit down! Wouldn’t you like some vodka? Delighted... And what is it you do?"
8 The devil grew even more embarrassed...
9 "Properly speaking, I have no definite occupation..." he answered, coughing in his confusion and blowing his nose into a copy of "
The Rebus." "Before, indeed, we had an occupation..."
10 "We used to tempt people... to lead them astray from the path of good onto the road of evil... But now that occupation,
entre nous soit dit, between us be it said (French: entre nous soit dit) isn’t worth a spit... There’s no path of good left anymore, nothing to lead people astray from. And besides, people have grown craftier than us... Just try tempting a man these days, when he’s finished every science at the university, been through fire, water, and brass pipes! How am I to teach you to steal a
ruble, when you’ve already snatched thousands without my help?"
11 "That’s true enough... But surely you occupy yourselves with something?"
12 "Yes... Our former post nowadays can only be nominal, but we still have work... We tempt governess-ladies, we egg young men on to write verses, we make drunken merchants smash mirrors... But in politics, in literature, and in science we no longer meddle at all... We don’t understand a blessed thing about it... Many of us contribute to ’The Rebus,’ there are even those who have quit hell and gone into people... These retired devils, having gone into people, married rich merchants’ wives and now live splendidly. Some of them practice law, others publish newspapers — on the whole, very capable and respected people!"
13 "Forgive the indiscreet question: what sort of salary do you receive?"
14 "Our position is the same as before, sir..." the devil answered. "The staff hasn’t changed in the slightest... As before, lodging, lighting, and heating are provided by the
treasury... They give us no wages, though, because all of us are considered supernumerary, and because devil is an honorary post... In general, frankly speaking, we live badly, might as well go begging... Thanks to people, they taught us to take bribes, or else we’d have long since died off... We live only on our takings... You supply sinners with provisions, and, well... you skim a little off the top... Satan has grown old, he keeps going off to watch the
Tsukki races, he has no time now for bookkeeping..."
15 Lakhmatov poured the devil a glass of vodka. He drank it and grew talkative. He told all the secrets of hell, poured out his soul, wept a little, and pleased Lakhmatov so much that the latter even let him stay the night. The devil slept in the stove and raved deliriously all night long. By morning he had vanished.
