1 In the very cheapest little room of the furnished lodgings called "
Lisbon," a third-year medical student,
Stepan Klochkov, was pacing from corner to corner, cramming away at his medicine with great diligence. From the unrelenting, strained cramming his mouth had gone dry and sweat had broken out on his forehead.
2 By the window, its edges filmed with icy patterns, sat on a stool his lodger,
Anyuta, a small, thin brunette of about twenty-five, very pale, with gentle gray eyes. Bent over, she was embroidering the collar of a man’s shirt with red thread. The work was urgent... The corridor clock struck two in the afternoon hoarsely, and the room had still not been tidied. A rumpled blanket, scattered pillows, books, clothing, a large dirty basin filled with soapy slops in which cigarette butts floated, litter on the floor – everything seemed to have been thrown into one heap, deliberately jumbled, crumpled...
3 "The right lung consists of three lobes..." Klochkov crammed. "The boundaries! The upper lobe on the front wall of the chest reaches to the 4th-5th ribs, on the lateral surface to the 4th rib... at the back to the spina scapulae..." to the spine of the shoulder blade (Latin).
4 Klochkov, straining to picture to himself what he had just read, raised his eyes to the ceiling. Failing to get a clear picture, he began feeling through his waistcoat for his own upper ribs.
5 "These ribs are like piano keys," he said. "So as not to lose count of them, one absolutely must get used to them. I’ll have to study them on the skeleton and on a living person... Come now, Anyuta, let me get my bearings!"
6 Anyuta set aside her embroidery, took off her blouse, and straightened up. Klochkov sat facing her, frowned, and began counting her ribs.
7 "Hm... The first rib can’t be felt... It’s behind the collarbone... Now this will be the second rib... Just so... This one now is the third... This one now is the fourth... Hm... Just so... Why are you flinching?"
8 "Your fingers are cold!"
9 "Now, now... you won’t die, don’t fidget... So then, this is the third rib, and this is the fourth... You look so thin, and yet the ribs can hardly be felt. This is the second... this is the third... No, this way I’ll get confused and won’t picture it clearly. I’ll have to draw it. Where’s my charcoal?"
10 Klochkov took a piece of charcoal and traced on Anyuta’s chest several parallel lines corresponding to the ribs.
11 "Excellent. Everything’s clear as day... Well now, and now one can also percuss it. Stand up!"
12 Anyuta stood up and raised her chin. Klochkov set about percussing and became so absorbed in this occupation that he did not notice how Anyuta’s lips, nose, and fingers had turned blue with cold. Anyuta was trembling and was afraid that the medical student, noticing her shivering, would stop drawing with the charcoal and tapping, and afterward might, perhaps, do poorly on his examination.
13 "Now everything’s clear," said Klochkov, ceasing his tapping. "You sit just like that and don’t rub off the charcoal, while I cram a little more."
14 And the medical student again began to pace and cram. Anyuta, as though tattooed, with black stripes across her chest, huddled up from the cold, sat and thought. She spoke, in general, very little, was always silent and kept thinking, thinking...
15 Over all the six or seven years of her wandering through
furnished rooms, she had known some five men like Klochkov. Now all of them had already finished their courses, gone out into the world, and, of course, being respectable people, had long since forgotten her. One of them was living in Paris, two were doctors, a fourth was a painter, and a fifth, they said, was already a professor. Klochkov was the sixth... Soon he too would finish his course and go out into the world. Undoubtedly the future was splendid, and out of Klochkov there would probably come a great man, but the present was quite bad: Klochkov had no tobacco, no tea, and only four lumps of sugar remained. She needed to finish the embroidery as quickly as possible, take it to
the customer, and then buy, with the quarter-
ruble she would get, both tea and tobacco.
16 "May I come in?" came a voice from behind the door.
18 "I’ve come to you with a request," he began, addressing Klochkov and glaring fiercely from under hair that hung over his forehead. "Do me a favor, lend me your lovely young lady for a couple of hours! I’m painting a picture, you see, and it’s simply impossible without a model!"
19 "Ah, with pleasure!" Klochkov agreed. "Go on, Anyuta."
20 "What do I want to see there!" Anyuta said quietly.
21 "Now, enough! A man is asking for the sake of art, not for some trifle. Why not help, if you can?"
22 Anyuta began to dress.
23 "And what are you painting?" asked Klochkov.
24 "
Psyche. A good subject, but somehow it just isn’t coming out; I have to keep painting from different models. Yesterday I was painting one with blue legs. Why, I ask, are your legs blue? It’s the stockings running, she says. But you’re always cramming! Happy man, you have patience."
–
25 "Medicine is such a business that one simply cannot do without cramming."
26 "Hm... Forgive me, Klochkov, but you live in a terribly piggish way! The devil knows how you live!"
27 "How do you mean? One can’t live otherwise... From my father I get only twelve a month, and on that money it’s hard to live decently."
28 "That’s so, that’s so..." said the painter, and wrinkled his face in disgust, "but still one could live better... A cultivated person absolutely must be an aesthete. Isn’t that so? And here with you,
the devil knows what! The bed isn’t made, slops, litter... yesterday’s kasha on a plate... ugh!"
29 "That’s true," said the medical student, embarrassed, "but Anyuta had no time to tidy up today. She’s occupied the whole time."
30 When the painter and Anyuta had gone out, Klochkov lay down on the divan and began cramming lying down, then fell asleep by accident, and, waking an hour later, propped his head on his fists and fell into gloomy thought. He recalled the painter’s words about how a cultivated person absolutely must be an aesthete, and his surroundings now indeed seemed to him repulsive, repellent. He seemed, as it were, to foresee with his mind’s eye that future of his when he would receive his patients in a consulting room, drink tea in a spacious dining room, in the company of a wife, a respectable woman – and now this basin of slops, in which cigarette butts floated, had a look of incredible foulness. Anyuta too now seemed to him plain, slovenly, pitiful... And he decided to part with her, at once, no matter what.
31 When she, having returned from the painter’s, was taking off her fur coat, he rose and said to her seriously:
32 "Here’s the thing, my dear... Sit down and listen. We must part! In a word, I no longer wish to live with you."
33 Anyuta had come back from the painter’s so weary, so exhausted. Her face, from standing so long as a model, had grown drawn, thinner, and her chin had become sharper. In answer to the medical student’s words she said nothing, and only her lips trembled.
34 "Admit that sooner or later we’d have had to part anyway," said the medical student. "You’re good, kind, and you’re not stupid, you’ll understand..."
35 Anyuta put her fur coat on again, silently wrapped her embroidery in paper, gathered her thread and needles; she found the little parcel with the four lumps of sugar on the windowsill and set it on the table beside the books.
36 "This is yours... the sugar..." she said quietly, and turned away to hide her tears.
37 "Well, why are you crying?" asked Klochkov.
38 He walked about the room in embarrassment and said:
39 "You’re strange, really... You yourself know that we must part. We can’t be together forever, after all."
40 She had already gathered up all her little bundles and had already turned toward him to say goodbye, and he felt sorry for her.
41 "What if I let her stay just one more week?" he thought. "Really, let her stay a bit longer, and in a week I’ll tell her to go."
42 And, vexed at his own lack of resolve, he called out to her sternly:
43 "Well, what are you standing there for? If you’re going, then go, and if you don’t want to, then take off your coat and stay! Stay!"
44 Anyuta took off her coat, silently, quietly, then blew her nose, also quietly, sighed, and noiselessly made her way to her usual position – to the stool by the window.
45 The student drew his textbook toward himself and again began pacing from corner to corner.
46 "The right lung consists of three lobes..." he crammed. "The upper lobe on the front wall of the chest reaches to the 4th-5th ribs..."
47 And in the corridor someone was shouting at the top of his voice:
А в коридоре кто-то кричал во всё горло;
