The Grateful One

Headnote

1 The Grateful One (Благодарный, subtitled “a psychological study”) appeared in 1883, in the early years of Chekhov’s apprenticeship in the comic weeklies, when he was writing at enormous speed under pseudonyms for a few kopecks a line. It belongs to the fast, broad, single-absurdity sketches of that period: a scene built almost entirely out of dialogue, with the narration kept to a bare minimum of stage directions.

The setup is simple. Ivan Petrovich, a superior of some standing, gives his secretary and distant relative Misha Bobov three hundred rubles – enough, it turns out, for Misha to marry his sweetheart Katya – and tells him to thank his wife, Marya Semyonovna, since it was she who begged the money out of him. Misha does exactly that, and then some: his gratitude, delivered on a couch in her private room, escalates without any of the participants quite noticing where it has gone, from hand-kissing to declarations of love for the husband’s soul to an embrace that Ivan Petrovich walks in on at the worst possible moment.

The comedy turns on a very Chekhovian confusion of registers. Misha’s speech never stops being the vocabulary of gratitude and moral uplift – love him, don’t betray him, thank heaven for such a husband – even as his hands and his body are doing something else entirely, and Marya Semyonovna’s own half-hearted attempts to extricate herself are undercut by the comically unhelpful furniture. Neither character ever says what is actually happening; the narrator doesn’t say it either. The story ends exactly where the joke demands: on Misha’s protest of sincerity to the outraged husband, a plea that is, in its way, entirely true and entirely useless.

“Here’s three hundred rubles for you!” said Ivan Petrovich, handing a bundle of banknotes to his secretary and distant relative Misha Bobov. “All right, take it... I didn’t want to give it, but... what’s to be done? Take it... For the last time... Thank my wife. If it weren’t for her, I wouldn’t have given it to you... She begged.”
Misha took the money and blinked his little eyes. He could not find words for gratitude. His eyes reddened and misted over. He would have embraced Ivan Petrovich, but... it’s so awkward to embrace one’s superiors!
“Thank my wife,” Ivan Petrovich said once more. “She begged for you... You touched her so with your tearful little face... Thank her.”
Misha backed away and went out of the study. He went to thank his distant relation, Ivan Petrovich’s spouse. She, a small, pretty little blonde, was sitting in her own room on a little couch reading a novel. Misha stopped in front of her and pronounced:
“I don’t know how to thank you!”
She smiled condescendingly, tossed the book aside, and graciously motioned him to the place beside her. Misha sat down.
“How am I to thank you? How? With what? Teach me! Marya Semyonovna! What you’ve done for me is more than a kindness! Why, with this money I’ll have my wedding with my dear, precious Katya!”
A tear crept down Misha’s cheek. His voice trembled.
“Oh, I thank you!”
He bent down and planted a kiss on Marya Semyonovna’s plump little hand.
“You’re so kind! And how kind your Ivan Petrovich is! How kind, how indulgent! He has a heart of gold! You must thank heaven for sending you such a husband! My dear, love him! I beg you, love him!”
Misha bent down and kissed both her hands at once. A tear crept down the other cheek too. One eye grew smaller.
“He’s old, he’s plain, but what a soul he has! Find me another soul like it anywhere! You won’t find one! So love him! You young wives are all so frivolous! In a man you look first for looks... for effect... I beg you!”
Misha seized her elbows and convulsively pressed them between his palms. Sobs could be heard in his voice.
“Don’t betray him! To betray such a man is to betray an angel! Value him, love him! To love such a wonderful man, to belong to him... why, that’s bliss! You women don’t want to understand a great deal... a great deal... I love you terribly, madly, because you belong to him! I kiss what’s holy and belongs to him... this is a sacred kiss... Don’t be afraid, I’m engaged... It’s nothing...”
Misha, trembling, gasping, stretched from her ear toward her little cheek and touched it with his mustache.
“Don’t betray him, my dear! You do love him? Yes? Love him?”
“Yes.”
“Oh, wonderful woman!”
For a minute Misha gazed, rapturous and moved, into her eyes. In them he read a noble soul...
“Wonderful you are...” he went on, stretching a hand toward her waist. “You love him... that wonderful man... that angel... that heart of gold... that heart...”
She wanted to free her waist from his hand, twisted about, but only got more entangled... Her little head – how uncomfortable it is to sit on these couches! – fell, quite by accident, onto Misha’s chest.
“His soul... his heart... Where find another man like him? To love him... to hear his heart beat... to walk hand in hand with him... to suffer... to share his joys... Understand me! Understand me!..”
Tears burst from Misha’s eyes... His head shook convulsively and sank onto her breast. He broke into sobs and clasped Marya Semyonovna in his arms...
It’s terribly uncomfortable to sit on these couches! She wanted to free herself from his arms, to comfort him, to calm him... He’s so highly strung! She would thank him for being so devoted to her husband... But there was simply no getting up!
“Love him... Don’t betray him... I beg you! You... women... are all so frivolous... you don’t understand...”
Misha said not another word... His tongue faltered and went still...
Five minutes later Ivan Petrovich came into her room for some reason... Poor fellow! Why hadn’t he come sooner? When they saw their superior’s purple face, his clenched fists, when they heard his hoarse, choked voice, they jumped to their feet...
“What’s the matter with you?” asked Marya Semyonovna, pale.
She asked because, after all, something had to be said!
“But... but I was sincere, Your Excellency!” Misha muttered. “Word of honor, I was sincere!”
