Headnote

A brief comic sketch from 1885, written in the mock-prescription format Chekhov favored for the humor magazines of his early "Antosha Chekhonte" period: eleven absurd "home remedies" for everyday nuisances, from rancid butter and bedbugs to a superior’s temper and a spouse’s infidelity. The joke sharpens as it goes, sliding from household pests into social satire — petitioning to deport cockroaches "back to Germany," or advising a debtor to sit down and lose money to Rothschild, Baron Ginzburg, and Polyakov, three real financiers of the day (the latter two prominent Russian-Jewish bankers), since men that rich won’t miss it.

The remedy for a superior’s anger — cold shower, tearful embrace, a slap on the belly — is a small anatomy of Russian bureaucratic groveling that Chekhov would return to more darkly in later stories. The final section, "Notes," is left as a bare header in the source, part of the piece’s mock scientific-pamphlet framing rather than an editorial omission.

So that butter doesn’t go rancid, eat it up as quickly as possible.
For bedbugs. Catch a bedbug and explain to it that in the amount of nitrogenous substances and fats it contains, plant food is in no way inferior to animal food, and amicably advise it to change its diet. And if even the latest findings of science fail to move it, then all that remains for you is to raise a finger and cry out: "Persist, then, in your villainies, bloodsucker!" and let the scoundrel go. Sooner or later good will triumph over evil.
For cockroaches. It is known that cockroaches were brought to us from Germany, and therefore it is entirely lawful and well-founded to petition for their deportation, by administrative order, back to their native land.
For fleas. Get married. All your fleas will transfer themselves to your wife, since it is known that fleas prefer to feast on ladies rather than on men. This depends not so much on the qualities of the one blood or the other as on the suitability of women’s costumes for the more comfortable billeting of insects: roomy, and at the same time snug.
For moths. Put a couple dozen tarantulas and scorpions into your fur coat, allotting each of them its own separate district.
For a sty on the eye. Show the sufferer a fig. But if the individual adorned with the sty outranks you, then show him the fig inside your pocket.
For being short of money. Take Rothschild, Baron Ginzburg, and Polyakov, sit them down to play stukolka with you, and go at it for high stakes. The higher the stake, the better. If you lose, don’t pay up, since your partners have plenty of money as it is; and if you win, then good for you.
For the wrath of one’s superior. Take your superior, lead him to the bathhouse, and put his head under a cold shower. Should this not help, then embrace your superior, kiss him, burst into tears, and say: "Let us forget everything that has passed between us!" And if even this does not help, then slap your superior on the belly and say: "Ah, uncle dear, uncle! Why should you and I be quarreling!" and so on.
For a spouse’s infidelity. Take the unfaithful spouse and hang upon his forehead a sign reading: "Strictly forbidden to outside persons, etc...."
For dampness in the house. Sprinkle the walls with baby powder, or paper them over with dried-up newspapers...
