An Expensive Dog

Headnote

1 "An Expensive Dog" (1885) is a brief comic scene built on a single drunken evening: Lieutenant Dubov, entertaining the volunteer soldier Knaps, tries by turns to sell, then simply give away, his setter Milka – swinging between maudlin declarations of love for the dog and sudden fits of disgust and irritation with her. The whole piece runs on this one comic engine, tightening with each reversal until the punchline, delivered cold: Dubov’s final order to have Milka sent to the knackers.

The story requires no historical apparatus to follow – its humor is purely in the mechanics of a drunk man’s mood swinging on a hinge – but it is a clean, minor example of the theater-and-barracks-sketch vein Chekhov mined constantly in these Oskolki-period years: two military men, an evening of drink, and a comic monologue that reveals more cruelty than its speaker intends. No ethnic slurs or offensive language appear in the source.

Lieutenant Dubov, an army man no longer young, and the volunteer Knaps were sitting and drinking.
“A magnificent dog!” Dubov was saying, showing Knaps his dog Milka. “A re-mar-kable dog! Just look at that muzzle! The muzzle alone is worth something! If you ran into a real fancier, they’d give you two hundred roubles for that muzzle alone! Don’t believe me? Then you simply don’t understand anything...”
“I understand, but...”
“She’s a setter, after all, a purebred English setter! A remarkable point, and the nose on her... what a nose! God, what a nose! Do you know how much I paid for Milka when she was still a puppy? A hundred roubles! A marvelous dog! You lit-tle rascal, Milka! You si-illy thing, Milka! Come here, come here... little doggy, my little pup...”
Dubov drew Milka to him and kissed her between the ears. Tears started up in his eyes.
“I won’t give you up to anyone... my beauty... you little bandit, you. You do love me, Milka? Don’t you?.. Now get away!” the lieutenant suddenly shouted. “Climbing right onto my uniform with your dirty paws! Yes, Knaps, I paid a hundred and fifty roubles for her as a pup! So there must have been something to it! Only one thing’s a pity: I’ve no time to hunt! The dog’s wasting away doing nothing, burying her talent... That’s exactly why I’m selling her. Buy her, Knaps! You’ll be grateful your whole life! Well, if you’re short of money, then go on, I’ll let you have her for half... Take her for fifty! Rob me blind!”
“No, my friend...” Knaps sighed. “If your Milka were of the male persuasion, then maybe I would buy her, but as it is...”
“Milka not of the male persuasion?” the lieutenant marveled. “Knaps, what’s the matter with you? Milka not of the male... persuasion?! Ha-ha! Then what is she, in your opinion? A bitch? Ha-ha... A fine fellow you are! He still can’t tell a dog from a bitch!”
“You talk to me as if I were blind, or a child...” Knaps said, offended. “Of course she’s a bitch!”
“Next you’ll be telling me I’m a lady! Ah, Knaps, Knaps! And you a graduate of a technical college too! No, my dear soul, this is a true, purebred dog, a male! What’s more, she’d give any male dog ten points’ head start and still win, and you say... not of the male persuasion! Ha-ha...”
“Forgive me, Mikhail Ivanovich, but you... you simply take me for a fool... It’s insulting, even...”
“Well, never mind, the devil take you... Don’t buy her... There’s no explaining anything to you! Next you’ll be saying that’s not a tail but a leg... Never mind. I only wanted to do you a favor. Vakhrameev, more brandy!”
The orderly brought more brandy. The friends poured themselves a glass each and fell to thinking. Half an hour passed in silence.
“And even if she is of the female sex...” the lieutenant said, breaking the silence, staring gloomily at the bottle. “A remarkable thing! It’s all the better for you. She’ll bring you puppies, and every puppy is worth twenty-five roubles... Anyone would gladly buy from you. I don’t understand why you’re so fond of male dogs! Bitches are a thousand times better. The female sex is both more grateful and more devoted... Well, if you’re really so afraid of the female sex, then go on, take her for twenty-five.”
“No, my friend... Not a kopeck will I give. In the first place, I have no need of a dog, and in the second, I have no money.”
“Then you should have said so before. Milka, get away from here!”
The orderly brought in a fried-egg dish. The friends set to it and silently cleaned the pan.
“You’re a good fellow, Knaps, an honest one...” said the lieutenant, wiping his lips. “I’m sorry to let you go like this, devil take it... You know what? Take the dog for nothing!”
“And where would I take her, my friend?” said Knaps, sighing. “And who would look after her for me?”
“Well, never mind, never mind... the devil take you! You don’t want her, fine, you don’t want her... Where are you off to? Sit down!”
Knaps, stretching, got up and reached for his cap.
“Time to go, farewell...” he said, yawning.
“Wait, then, I’ll see you out.”
Dubov and Knaps got dressed and went out into the street. They walked the first hundred paces in silence.
“You don’t know anyone I could give the dog to?” the lieutenant began. “Haven’t you any acquaintances of that sort? The dog, you saw, is a good one, a purebred, but... I’ve absolutely no use for her!”
“I don’t know, my dear fellow... What acquaintances would I have here?”
All the way to Knaps’s lodgings the friends said not another word. Only when Knaps had shaken the lieutenant’s hand and opened his own garden gate did Dubov cough and say, somehow hesitantly:
“You don’t happen to know whether the knackers around here take dogs or not?”
“They must take them... I couldn’t say for certain.”
“I’ll send her tomorrow with Vakhrameev... The devil take her, let them skin her... A vile dog! Disgusting! Not only has she made filth all through the rooms, but yesterday in the kitchen she gobbled up all the meat, the d-d-damned creature... If only she were of good breeding, but no, the devil knows what she is, a cross between a mongrel and a pig. Good night!”
“Farewell!” said Knaps.
The gate slammed, and the lieutenant was left alone.
