1 (AN IMPLAUSIBLE STORY)
2 Rybkin, a staffer on the newspaper "Don’t Give a Damn About Your Heads!", a man puffy, clammy, and dull, stood in the middle of his room and gazed fondly at the ceiling, where a hook stuck out, fitted for a lamp. In his hands dangled a rope.
3 "Will it hold or won’t it? – he thought. – It might tear loose, God forbid, and the hook’ll crack me on the head... Life, damn it to hell! There’s not even a decent place to hang oneself!"
4 I don’t know how the madman’s musings would have ended, had the door not opened and Rybkin’s friend
Shlepkin not walked into the room, a staffer of the newspaper "Judas the Betrayer," lively, cheerful, rosy-cheeked.
5 "Greetings,
Vasya!" he began, sitting down. "I’ve come for you... Let’s go! Out in the Vyborg district there’s an attempted murder, good for thirty lines... Some scoundrel cut her up and didn’t finish the job. Should’ve cut a full hundred lines’ worth, the swine! Often, brother, I think, and I even want to write about this: if humanity were humane and knew how badly we need to eat, it would hang itself, burn, and stand trial a hundred times more often. Bah! What’s this?" – he threw up his hands at the sight of the rope. – "Don’t tell me you’ve taken it into your head to hang yourself?"
6 "Yes, brother..." – Rybkin sighed. – "That’s it... farewell! I’m sick of life! It’s time..."
7 "Well, isn’t that idiotic? How on earth could life have sickened you?"
8 "Oh, just everything... Some kind of fog all around, uncertainty... obscurity... nothing to write about. From that thought alone a man could hang himself ten times over: all around, people are devouring one another, robbing, drowning, spitting in each other’s mugs, and there’s nothing to write about! Life boils, crackles, hisses, and there’s nothing to write about! Some damned dualism..."
9 "What do you mean, nothing to write about? If you had ten hands, there’d be work enough for all ten."
10 "No, there’s nothing to write about! My life is over! Well, what do you order me to write about? They’ve written about cashiers, written about pharmacies, written about the Eastern question... written so much that everything’s gotten tangled and you can’t make head or tail of the matter. They’ve written about unbelief, mothers-in-law, jubilees, fires, women’s hats, the decline of morals,
about Zucchi... They’ve picked over the whole universe, and nothing’s left. Here you are talking about a murder just now: a man got knifed... What a marvel! I know of a murder where a man was hanged, knifed, doused in kerosene, and burned – all of it at once, and still I say nothing. I don’t give a damn! All that’s been done already, and there’s nothing extraordinary in it. Suppose you
stole two hundred thousand, or set fire to
Nevsky Prospect from both ends – I don’t give a damn about that either! It’s all ordinary, they’ve written about it already. Farewell!"
11 "I don’t understand! Such a mass of questions... such a variety of phenomena! Throw a stone at a dog, and you’ll hit some question or phenomenon..."
12 "Questions and phenomena are worth nothing... For instance, here I am hanging myself right now... To your mind that’s a question, an event: but to my mind, five lines of petit type – and nothing more. And no point writing about it. People have been dying off, they die off, and they’ll go on dying off – there’s nothing new in that... All these varieties, brother, all this boiling, hissing – they’re all far too monotonous... And it’s sickening even to write it myself, and I pity the reader too: what did the poor soul do to deserve being driven into melancholy?"
13 Rybkin sighed, shook his head, and smiled bitterly.
14 "But now if," – he said, – "something special were to happen, something, you know, smashing, something utterly vile, thoroughly rotten, the kind of thing that would make the devils themselves keel over from fright, well, then I’d come back to life! If the earth were to pass through the tail of a comet, say, or
Bismarck were to convert to the Mohammedan faith, or
the Turks took
Kaluga by storm... or, you know, they made
Notovich a
privy councillor – in a word, something incendiary, something desperate – ah, how I’d come alive then!"
15 "You do love to look at things on a grand scale – try swimming in shallower waters instead. Look closely at a blade of grass, a grain of sand, a crack in the floor... everywhere there’s life, drama, tragedy! In every splinter, in every pig there’s drama!"
16 "Lucky for you your nature’s such that you can write about a scraped-out eggshell, but me... no!"
17 "And what of it?" – Shlepkin snapped. – "What’s so bad, in your opinion, about a scraped-out eggshell? A mass of questions! In the first place, when you see before you a scraped-out egg, you’re seized with indignation, you’re outraged!! An egg, intended by nature for the reproduction of the life of an individual... understand! life!... life, which in its turn would give life to a whole generation, and that generation to thousands of future generations, suddenly eaten, made a victim of gluttony, of whim! That egg would have produced a hen, and the hen over the course of its whole life would have laid a thousand eggs – there you have, plain as day, the undermining of the economic order, the devouring of the future! In the second place, looking at the scraped-out egg, you rejoice: if the egg’s been eaten, it means people in
Russia are eating well... In the third place, it occurs to you that eggshell is used to fertilize the soil, and you advise the reader to value what’s thrown away. In the fourth place, the scraped-out egg leads you to thoughts on the transience of all earthly things: it lived, and now it’s gone! In the fifth place... But why am I even counting? There’s enough here for a hundred issues!"
18 "No, where would I get any of that! And besides, I’ve lost faith in myself, I’ve fallen into despondency... To hell with all of it!"
19 Rybkin stood up on a stool and fastened the rope to the hook.
20 "You’re wrong, I swear to God you’re wrong!" – Shlepkin pleaded. – "Just look: we’ve got twenty newspapers and every one of them full! So there must be something to write about! Even the provincial papers, and they’re full too!"
21 "No... Somnolent town councilmen, cashiers..." – Rybkin muttered, as if groping for something to hold onto, – "the gentry bank, the passport system... the abolition of ranks,
Rumelia... God be with them!"
22 "Well, as you like..."
23 Rybkin threw the noose around his neck and hanged himself with pleasure. Shlepkin sat down at the table and in a single moment wrote: a news item on the suicide, an
obituary for Rybkin, a feuilleton on the subject of frequent suicides, a leading article on the strengthening of the penalty imposed on suicides, and a few more articles on the same theme. Having written all this, he put it in his pocket and ran cheerfully off to the editorial office, where wages, glory, and readers awaited him.
