2 "Thank God! I’m home at last... I’ll rest my soul here... by the domestic hearth, beside my wife... My
Masha is the only person who can understand me, sympathize with me sincerely..."
4 "Oh, it’s nothing, my soul is just foul... I’ve come to you and I’m glad of it: I’ll rest my soul."
5 "But what’s happened?"
6 "Everything’s foul in general, and today especially.
Petrov won’t extend me any more credit on paper. The secretary’s gone off on a bender... But all that’s trifles, it’ll sort itself out somehow... Now here’s where the real trouble is,
Manechka... I’m sitting in the office today reading proofs of my leader. Suddenly, if you can believe it, the door opens and in walks
Prince Prochukhantsev, an old friend and companion of mine, the very one who always plays the young lovers in the amateur theatricals and who gave
the actress Zryakina his white horse for a single kiss. "What
the devil’s brought him here," I think. "This isn’t for nothing... He’s come, I think, to arrange some publicity for Zryakina." We got to talking... this and that, one thing and another... Turns out he hadn’t come about publicity at all. He’d brought his own verses to be printed..."
7 ""I felt," he says, "a fiery flame in my breast, and... a flaming fire. I long to taste the sweetness of authorship..."
8 He takes a pink, scented sheet of paper out of his pocket and hands it over...
9 ""Verses," he says... "I’m, he says, somewhat subjective in them, but all the same...
Nekrasov too was subjective..."
10 I took these very subjective verses and read them... The most impossible nonsense! You read them and feel your eyes start to itch and something pressing under your ribs, as if you’d swallowed a millstone... He’d dedicated the verses to Zryakina. Had he dedicated them to me, I’d have hauled him before
the magistrate! In one stanza the word "headlong" appears five times! And the rhymes! "Lilies" rhymed with "silly"! The word "horse" rhymed with "course"!
11 ""No," I say, "you’re my friend and companion, but I cannot print your verses..."
12 ""Why not, if I may ask?"
13 ""Well... for reasons beyond the editorial staff’s control... They don’t suit the paper’s program..."
14 I turned red all over, my eyes started itching, I lied that my head was splitting... Well, how was I to tell him his verses were worthless? He noticed my embarrassment and puffed up like a turkey.
15 ""You," he says, "are angry with Zryakina, and that’s why you won’t print my verses. I understand... I un-der-stand, my dear sir!"
16 He accused me of partiality, called me a philistine, a clericalist, and I don’t know what else... For a solid two hours he lectured me. In the end he promised to stir up an intrigue against my person... Left without saying goodbye... Such is life, my dear! On the fourth of December, Zryakina’s nameday, on Varvara’s day, the verses must appear in print no matter what. Come death itself, they must be printed! To print them is impossible: it’ll disgrace the paper before all of
Russia. Not to print them is equally impossible: Prochukhantsev will stir up his intrigue, and I’ll be ruined without a
kopeck to my name. Now you try and think how to get out of this absurd position!"
18 "About nothing... Nonsense... Do you want me to read it? It begins like this:"
19 Through the smoke of a dreaming cigar
20 You drifted through my reveries,
21 Bearing with you love’s blows
22 With a fiery smile upon your lips...
23 And then, all at once, a shift:
24 Forgive me, my snow-white angel,
25 Companion of my days and my tender ideal,
26 That I, forgetting love, rush headlong
27 Where death’s jaws wait... Oh, I am horrified!
28 And so on... nonsense.
29 "Well, what of it? These are very sweet verses!" Marya Denisovna threw up her hands. "Very sweet indeed! What’s wrong with them? You’re simply carping, Sergei! "Through the smoke... with a fiery smile"... So you understand nothing at all! You don’t understand, Sergei!"
30 "It’s you who don’t understand, not I!"
31 "No, forgive me... I don’t understand prose, but I understand verse perfectly well! The prince composed it beautifully! Splendidly! You hate him, and that’s why you won’t print it!"
32 The editor sighed and tapped his finger first on the table, then on his forehead...
33 "Connoisseurs!" he muttered, smiling contemptuously.
34 And, taking up his top hat, he shook his head bitterly and walked out of the house...
36 He felt like drinking himself into oblivion...
