Headnote
1 Written from the Kiselyov family estate at Babkino, where Chekhov spent several summers, this letter is addressed to Nikolai Alexandrovich Leikin, the editor of the humor magazine "Oskolki" ("Splinters") and one of Chekhov’s earliest literary patrons. Numbered in Chekhov’s typical list style, it ranges over fishing advice for Leikin’s household staff, gentle complaints about his own laziness, news of his forthcoming book "Motley Stories" (referred to here indirectly via its vignette and price), a house call list of rural patients from his medical practice, and plans for a possible trip to the Valaam monastery.
2 The letter is a vivid example of Chekhov’s private comic voice: playful, self-deprecating, and stitched together from unrelated fragments of country life. It also documents his double life in these years as both a jobbing comic writer for the popular press and a country doctor, and shows his early, still-developing relationship with Leikin, who was instrumental in getting Chekhov’s early work into print.

I received your letter, most kind Nikolai Aleksandrovich, and so that you won’t reproach me for laziness, I hasten to answer it. Primo: two letters have already been sent to you, one from me, another from Nikolai, who is waiting for orders from you. Both letters are addressed to the village of Ivanovskoye.

2) Tell Timofei that I envy him. This year my fishing isn’t going well. All sorts of trash gets caught, while anything bigger stubbornly avoids my acquaintance. Pike are biting, but there’s as much profit from pike as from mangy dogs. Nothing but wetness. I advise your venerable angler, who resembles an Old Believer bishop, to try fishing with live bait: take a thick line, a good sinker, and a solid hook on a wire leader (a "bass" hook). A hook of about this size will do:

or a bit bigger. The bait is a live minnow (gudgeon, chub), through whose "gills" the hook is passed into its mouth. It’s cast out overnight. I also recommend he set a fish trap in the pond. Into the trap one should put buckwheat kasha with curd cheese, in a muslin bag. For now that’s all the advice I have for him.

The vignette came out well. I don’t know why you disliked it so! On the whole the book’s appearance has exceeded my expectations, for which I offer great thanks to those responsible, but inside it isn’t quite... it would have been better to throw out some of the stories and mend others. The price is rather high.

As for Valaam, fate will decide: if I publish a great deal, I’ll come; but if I’m lazy, the trip won’t happen. In any case I can’t come before July. If I do come, it will be with my sister. "They’ve stirred," it seems, material for a future book. I like "Stukin and Khr" so much that I give it to everyone to read. The book is good in that it deals not with any one particular bank, but with banking practices in Russia generally. It’s the best of all your books. Though, it is unique in its own way, and can’t be compared with other books.
Насчет Валаама решит судьба: если буду много печататься, то приеду, если же буду лениться, то путешествие не состоится. Во всяком случае могу приехать не раньше июля. Если приеду, то с сестрой. "Зашевелились", очевидно, материал для будущей книги. "Стукин и Хр" мне так нравятся, что я даю их всем читать. Книга тем хороша, что в ней трактуется не об одном каком-нибудь банке, а вообще о банковских порядках на Руси. Это самая лучшая из всех Ваших книг. Впрочем, она в своем роде, и сравнивать ее с другими книгами нельзя.
