Letter · 1886

To N. A. Leikin, 15–20 December 1886. Moscow.

Headnote

1 A short year-end note from Chekhov to Nikolai Leikin, the editor of Oskolki (Fragments), for whom Chekhov wrote much of his early comic fiction. The opening lines of the letter are lost. Chekhov encloses a Christmastide story written during a bout of insomnia, jokes that he is done producing "works" for the year (quoting Turgenev’s "enough!"), asks Leikin to prod the illustrator Nikolai for overdue drawings, sends greetings to Leikin’s household, and promises a New Year’s sketch of Moscow life.

2 Slight as it is, the letter is a good specimen of Chekhov’s brisk, joking correspondence with Leikin during his years as a jobbing contributor to the comic press – part business (chasing an illustrator), part social pleasantry, part self-deprecating aside about his own writing.

Between 15 and 20 December 1886. Moscow.

The beginning of the letter has not survived. Besides that, my kindest Nikolai Alexandrovich, I am sending you a Christmastide story that I wrote thanks to insomnia. Well then, farewell until the New Year. I shall go on writing letters, but as for works – "enough!", as Turgenev said.
Might you find it worthwhile (yourself, or through your secretary) to write and hurry Nikolai along with the drawings? I don’t see him. Address: Plyushchikha, Smirnovskaya’s house, apartment No. 9.
No 9.
I’m off now for a drive along the Kuznetsky. Farewell and keep well. My regards to Praskovya Nikiforovna, to Fedya, and to the little dogs.
Yours, A. Chekhov.
By the New Year I’ll send along a "fragment of Moscow life."
