Headnote
A brisk, playful note to his younger brother Mikhail, written the same day, asking him to buy a cane within a modest price range and congratulating him on getting through his exams. Chekhov’s brother Ivan adds a postscript in his own hand, asking for a cane of his own, with Anton excusing the trivial nature of the request.

Do me a favor, buy me a cane to your own taste, not cheaper than a ruble and not dearer than two. Congratulations on surviving the last judgment. I’m worn out from the exams.
Сделай милость, купи мне на свой вкус палку не дешевле рубля и не дороже двух. Поздравляю с окончанием страшного суда. Замучился экзаменами.
