Letter · 1884

To N. A. Leikin, 25 November 1884. Moscow.

H. A. Лейкину, 25 ноября 1884 г. Москва.

Headnote

A brief note from Chekhov to Nikolai Leikin, editor of the Petersburg humor magazine Oskolki ("Fragments"), for which Chekhov was a regular contributor. Chekhov explains that instead of a short feuilleton on the ongoing "Rykov trial" – a major fraud case involving the collapse of a bank in Skopin that had drawn national attention in 1884 – he is sending a set of sketches titled "Skopin Sketches" ("Skopinskie kartinki"), reasoning that the scale of the scandal could not be compressed into a standard 40-50 line feuilleton.

Chekhov was in Moscow covering aspects of the trial and reports that proceedings would continue for at least another two weeks, offering to send further sketches for a subsequent issue. The letter closes with a characteristically terse, weary sign-off after a day at the courthouse.

Dear Sir,
Уважаемый
Instead of a feuilleton about Rykov, which would have come out both slight and pitiful (you can’t cram the whole trial into 40–50 lines of feuilleton), I am sending you "Skopin Sketches." I think they’ll do...
Вместо фельетона о Рыкове, который вышел бы и мал и жалок (в 40–50 строк фельетона всего процесса не всунешь), посылаю Вам "Скопинские картинки". Думаю, что сгодятся...
The trial will drag on for another 2 weeks, and maybe longer... If you like, I’ll send more such sketches for the next issue too... There is some very characteristic material... My regards... I’ll write a detailed letter tomorrow at the courthouse, but for now, sleep, and sleep!
Процесс протянется еще 2 недели, а может быть, и больше... Если хотите, то и к следующему нумеру пришлю таких картинок... Есть очень характерные материи... Кланяюсь... Подробное письмо напишу завтра в суде, а сейчас спать и спать!
