1 A brief note sent from Moscow to Nikolai Mikhailovich Yezhov, a young writer and fellow contributor to the humor magazines whom Chekhov knew socially in this period. It was written in early October 1887, just as Chekhov had finished the manuscript of his first full-length play, "Ivanov," which premiered at Moscow’s Korsh Theatre later that November.

2 The note is a short, practical invitation: Chekhov announces the play is done and asks Yezhov, who had apparently offered some kind of help with it, to come by the next morning for breakfast and dinner. The text preserves the letter’s original address-block layout – the closing "On the back" heading followed by the street address and addressee’s name as they appeared on the envelope, each on its own line.
