Headnote
1 Written from Moscow on March 4, 1888, this short note is addressed to the writer Kazimir Boleslavovich Barantsevich. Chekhov passes along a request from the editorial board of the newspaper "Russkie Vedomosti" ("Russian Gazette"), which – knowing of his acquaintance with Barantsevich – has asked him to invite Barantsevich to contribute short sketches and stories on a regular basis, at a length typical of the paper’s feuilleton column, with the fee left to be settled between Barantsevich and the editors themselves.
2 Chekhov closes with a brief personal note, acknowledging that he has received and read a piece titled "The Bondwoman," with thanks to follow when the two next meet.

The editorial board of "Russkie Vedomosti," knowing that I am acquainted with you, has asked me to convey to you that it would be glad to receive from you, as often as possible, short sketches and stories of the usual feuilleton length (300–600 lines). The fee is entirely for you to settle with them.
