To V. A. Tikhonov, 8 December 1891. Moscow.

Headnote

Written 8 December 1891 from Moscow to Vladimir Alexeyevich Tikhonov (1857–1914), the playwright, prose writer, and editor of Sever with whom Chekhov carried on a long, jocular correspondence.

Chekhov chases up a story he sent Tikhonov ten days earlier, on 30 November, and has heard nothing back about – asking whether it arrived, whether it is any good, and whether Tikhonov will send proofs. He reminds Tikhonov that he had asked for an advance against the story and, recalling that Tikhonov once mentioned money could be had "in advance too," presses the point: he is entirely without funds, needs to travel to Petersburg, and cannot even afford the fare. He asks after Tikhonov and the subscription numbers for Sever, notes it is being well advertised, and reports that Moscow has no news – he has been housebound recovering from influenza, the theaters are said to be dull, and there is twenty-three degrees of frost. He asks Tikhonov to write back in more detail and, if sending money, to route it by telegraph transfer through the Volkov brothers’ office on Nevsky, at his own expense. He closes saying he will see Tikhonov when he reaches Petersburg, where he will be staying with Suvorin since he does not have Tikhonov’s home address, and sends his regards to mutual acquaintances.

On the 30th of November, dear Vladimir Alekseyevich, I sent you a story – ten days have passed now, and from you not a voice, not a sigh... Did you get the story? Has it gone under somewhere in the waves of life? Is it any good? And so on and so forth. If the story is good, will you send me the proofs, as I asked? In the letter enclosed with the story, I also cried out to you about a little advance. You let slip once, in one of your letters, that one can get it "in advance too." Sending off my story, I recalled that "in advance too" with particular pleasure, since I haven’t got a kopeck to my name, literally. I need to go to Petersburg, and I don’t even have the money for the ticket, so I’m sitting by the sea waiting for fair weather. It’s enough to make a man cry for help! That’s what it means to travel.
How are you getting on? How’s your subscription doing? Sever is being advertised well, and one can hope for success.
Here in Moscow there’s no news at all. Perhaps there is some, but I know nothing about it, since I sit at home whole days on end recovering from influenza. They say it’s dull at the theaters. Nothing’s been heard of any good new plays. It’s twenty-three degrees of frost.
Write back, and in general write in more detail. One more thing: if you should be sending me money, could this ceremony be arranged through the office of the Volkov brothers (on Nevsky), by telegraph transfer? The transfer costs are mine. I’m in a positive fever of impatience for it!
All the best! When I’m in Petersburg we’ll see each other. I’ll be staying at Suvorin’s, since I don’t know your home address.
My regards to our mutual acquaintances.
Yours, A. Chekhov.
