Dated 3 January 1892, from Petersburg, to Yevgraf Petrovich Yegorov, the same land captain (zemsky nachalnik) in Nizhny Novgorod province addressed in the earlier letters of 5 October 1891, 11 December 1891, 14 December 1891, 20 December 1891, and 26 December 1891.
Chekhov reports that he had earlier sent a registered letter and several money packets in reply to Yegorov, but, receiving no answer for a long time, had begun to suspect his letters were not arriving – which inquiry has now confirmed: he had been addressing them to a nonexistent "Station Bogoyavlenskoye" in Nizhny Novgorod uyezd, when the correct name is "Station Bogoyavlenye." He asks Yegorov to make inquiries, retrieve the letters, and write back, noting that the long silence has been a strain on him. He closes with New Year’s greetings and wishes for Yegorov’s happiness and success, then a courtesy.
