Headnote

Dated 13 January 1892, from Moscow, to Dmitry Viktorovich Garin-Vinding, an actor and theatrical figure.

A brief note of appointment. Chekhov explains he is hard to catch at home: he leaves Moscow the next day and will not be back before the 23rd. He asks Garin-Vinding to write after the 23rd naming a day and hour to call, promising to wait for him, and suggests evening, around six o’clock, as the best time. He signs off, then gives the reverse-side address block: Bronnaya, B. Kozikhinsky Lane, Teptsov’s house, apartment 4, addressed to Garin-Vinding by his honorific.

Dear Dmitry Viktorovich, it is difficult to catch me at home now. Tomorrow I leave Moscow and shall not return home before the 23rd. After the 23rd, write to me on what day and hour you will be so good as to call on me, and I shall wait for you. Best of all in the evening, about six o’clock.
Yours, A. Chekhov.
