Letter · 1892

To Ye. P. Yegorov, 26 January 1892. Moscow.

Headnote

dateline (given twice, in full and abbreviated), a business paragraph on subscription funds, a report of illness, two brief domestic items, greetings, two short postscript-like notes, the closing, and a final one-line postscript about a play. Dated 26 January 1892, from Moscow.

A letter to Yevgraf Petrovich Yegorov mixing charitable bookkeeping with personal news, four days before the companion letter of 29 January 1892 to the same addressee – not a duplicate, but part of an ongoing exchange. Chekhov accounts precisely for subscription money passed through sheet No. 28 – funds collected for famine relief, a cause he was actively organizing support for in this period – noting sums already received, sums now sent, a friend’s separate collection needing receipts, and a small balance held over. He then reports a sudden illness (pain across the shoulder blades and chest, blamed on a cold caught sleeping near a hot ventilation flue in Nizhny Novgorod) severe enough to keep him from sitting, writing, or dressing normally. Domestic notes follow: a children’s library being assembled for Natasha and a spoon promised for Borya, to be delivered in person come spring. He closes with greetings to the household, a forgotten shirt left at his hotel (offered to the chambermaid), and two afterthoughts – pamphlets not yet received, and news that a play of his will not be staged.

On subscription sheet No. 28 you, most kind Yevgraf Petrovich, have already received 25 rubles from me at Belaya. Now on the same sheet I am sending another 60 rubles. The remaining 22 rubles were collected by a friend of mine; I enclose the list of donors: since they were not entered on any of the subscription sheets, be so good as to send them receipts. 41 kopecks are left with me until the next shipment.
Can you imagine, I arrived home quite ill. A cruel pain in both shoulder blades, between the shoulder blades and in the chest muscles. I must have caught cold in Nizhny, after sleeping a night under the tropically hot breath of a ventilation flue. I can neither sit bent over, nor write, nor pull on my boots. It’s simply a disaster.
The library for Natasha is already being assembled. It’s turning out to be a most varied and agreeable library. I’ll send it, as you asked, by post. I’ll bring the long spoon for Borya myself in the spring.
My regards to all of yours; to Natalia Nikolayevna, besides a bow, great thanks for her hospitality and warmth.
I left a shirt at the Post Hotel. That’s for the chambermaid.
Keep well.
Yours, A. Chekhov.

I have not received the pamphlets.
Alas! My play will not be staged.
