Chekhov records 25 rubles due under subscription sheet No. 28, donated by the journal "Russkaya Mysl" (no receipt needed), a further 1 ruble from Ye. I. Konovitser (receipt needed), and totals the two at 26 rubles. He notes that the children’s library promised in the earlier letter is being sent the next day, sends greetings to the household, and closes with a terse exhortation – "Set up the soup kitchens!" – reflecting the famine relief effort he was organizing support for in this period.
