Addressed, like and the rest of the run (, -1035, -1041, -1044, -1046, -1057, -1059, -1069, -1081, -1090), to Alexander Ivanovich Smagin, the Poltava-province landowner and family friend through whom the Chekhovs were pursuing the farmstead ("khutor") purchase that becomes the Melikhovo estate later in 1892. A genuine companion letter to (also to Smagin, four days later, 30 January 1892), not a duplicate.
Tone: brisk, businesslike, and warm by turns – solicitous famine-relief reporting and physical complaint, practical resettlement advice, comic mock-outrage over the Zankovetskaya/Leshkovskaya tease (continuing a running joke with Smagin), a small unguarded note of pleasure at being able to help with famine relief, and an affectionate, slightly plaintive close ("It is dull without you"), consistent with the register of the rest of the Smagin correspondence from this period.

I received your congratulatory telegram and am flattered and touched. Only I did not understand one question in it: "Did you receive the assistance?" What assistance is meant? I am late in answering your letter and telegram because I have only just returned, in the last few days, from Nizhny Novgorod province. There was a hard frost, a blizzard caught me out in open country, and I must have caught a bad chill, since for three days now I have been sitting like a stick and walking around stretched bolt upright, as if standing at attention: my shoulder blades and the space between them ache cruelly, it hurts me to move my neck and arms, and putting on stockings and boots is almost impossible. As for the famine, it is not in the least exaggerated.
Получил Вашу поздравительную телеграмму и польщен и тронут. Только не понял в ней одного вопроса: "Получил ли помощь?" О какой помощи идет речь? Запаздываю ответом на Ваши письмо и телеграмму, потому что только на днях вернулся из Нижегородской губ. Был сильный мороз, захватила в поле метель, и я, должно быть, сильно простудился, так как вот уже третий день сижу, как палка, и хожу, вытянувшись во фронт: лопатки и пространство между лопатками болят жестоко, и больно мне двигать шеей и руками, а надевать чулки и сапоги почти невозможно. Что касается голода, то он нисколько не преувеличен.
The Khokhols would do best to resettle in Semipalatinsk province and the Ussuri territory. It is not so cold there as in Tomsk and Tobolsk provinces. What’s more, in the Ussuri territory there are already whole villages made up entirely of Poltava Khokhols. There is no work that would satisfy you; apart from geography and general indications – absolutely nothing. You may apply officially for the information you need to the Society for the Study of the Amur Region, in the city of Vladivostok. The same information, I expect, the governors could give you, and perhaps the resettlement committees as well.
Хохлам лучше всего переселяться в Семипалатинскую и в Уссур край. Тут не так холодно, как в Томской и Тобольск губ. К тому же в Уссур крае имеются уже целые деревни, всплошную состоящие из полтавских хохлов. Сочинений, которые удовлетворили бы Вас, нет; кроме географии и общих указаний – ровнехонько ничего. Вы можете официально обратиться за нужными сведениями в Общество изучения Амурского края, в г. Владивостоке. Таковые же сведения, полагаю, могут дать Вам губернаторы и, быть может, переселенческие комитеты.
Matters with the farmstead are dragging on. We are lost in uncertainty and losing heart. I have not been to see Zankovetskaya for a long time now, and so, my dear sir, your hints are vile slander, for which you will answer to me. Did I, after all, hint by so much as a single word at your relations with Leshkovskaya? You are in love with Leshkovskaya, while I, meanwhile, call on Zankovetskaya only as a plain acquaintance and an admirer of her talent. Tomorrow I shall go to her to inquire about the farmstead; she is corresponding with someone or other and recommends Chernigov province to me, where, by her account, there are many farmsteads for sale and where, incidentally, there are no rivers, only ponds.
Дела насчет хутора идут вяло. Теряемся в неизвестности и падаем духом. У Заньковецкой я давно уже не был и потому, милостисдарь, Ваши намеки являются гнусною клеветою, за которую Вы мне ответите. Ведь я ни одним словом не намекал на Ваши отношения к Лешковской? Вы влюблены в Лешковскую, я же между тем бываю у Заньковецкой только как простой знакомый и почитатель таланта. Завтра поеду к ней справиться насчет хутора; она кое с кем переписывается и рекомендует мне Черниговскую губ, где, по ее словам, много продажных хуторов и где, кстати сказать, нет рек, а одни только пруды.
