A real scholarly society founded in Vladivostok in 1884 (still extant) for the study of the Russian Far East, to which Chekhov directs Smagin for official information on resettlement destinations for famine-displaced peasants.

A real learned society (\foreignlanguage{russian}{Общество изучения Амурского края}), founded in Vladivostok in 1884 for the scholarly study of Russia's Far East and still extant today (as the Primorye Regional Museum's affiliated society); Chekhov directs Smagin to it as the correct official channel for detailed resettlement information, alongside the more general option of provincial governors and resettlement committees.
