Letter · 1892

To Ye. P. Yegorov, 25 February 1892. Moscow.

Е. П. ЕГОРОВУ, 25 февраля 1892 г. Москва.

Headnote

dateline (given twice, in full and abbreviated), a short covering note enclosing money, a closing greeting, the signature, a correction of the sum with a donor list (four entries and a running total), and a final postscript on a bureaucratic formality. Dated 25 February 1892, from Moscow.

The fourth and last letter in the famine-relief correspondence with Yevgraf Petrovich Yegorov, following (26 January) (29 January), and (6 February). A hurried note written while Chekhov is packing: he first says he is enclosing 12 rubles, promises a fuller letter shortly, sends greetings, and signs off – then immediately corrects himself, revising the sum to 14 rubles and itemizing four new donors (N. I. Fyodorov, the editorial office of the journal "Sport," P. V. Petrov, and B. A. Suvorin) whose receipts Yegorov is asked to send on. A final postscript, unrelated to the subscription bookkeeping, passes along a piece of practical information from Voronezh: Governor Kurovsky’s requirement that a formal record be drawn up whenever a horse dies, a formality Yegorov had evidently asked about, presumably in connection with the horse-relief loan scheme described in.

I am sending you, Yevgraf Petrovich, 12 rubles. In a few days I will write to you in detail, but for now forgive me. I am packing.
Посылаю Вам, Евграф Петрович, 12 рублей. На днях буду писать Вам подробно, а пока извините. Укладываюсь.
Warm greetings to your family.
Вашим сердечный привет.
Yours, A. Chekhov.
I am sending not 12 but 14. Here is a list of the donors to whom you should kindly send receipts:
Посылаю не 12, а 14. Вот список жертвователей, которым благоволите прислать расписки:
The editorial office of "Sport," 1 ruble.
Редакция "Спорта" 1 р.
B. A. Suvorin, 10 rubles.
Total, 14 rubles.
Итого 14 р.
The Voronezh governor Kurovsky told me that in the event of the death of any horse, a formal record must be drawn up. You were interested in this formality, and so I am passing it along to you.
Воронежский губернатор Куровский сказал мне, что в случае падежа какой-либо лошади нужно составлять акт. Этою формальностью Вы интересовались, и потому сообщаю Вам ее.
