To the Chekhovs, 23 April 1890. Volga, parokhod "Aleksandr Nevsky".

Headnote

one continuous comic travel dispatch to the Chekhov household in Moscow, written aboard the Volga steamer "Alexander Nevsky" on the second morning of the journey that would take Chekhov to Sakhalin. It carries two datelines (1-2) because Chekhov first headed the letter on starting it and then added "early morning" when he resumed writing before posting it – a habit seen elsewhere in this leg of the correspondence, not a sign of two spliced documents. The whole item is addressed to "my friends the Tunguses" (the family’s private joke-name for themselves), moves through a single unbroken sequence of travel anecdote, comic complaint, and family errands, and closes with a stacked sequence of sign-offs (18-22: a farewell, a joke pseudonym, a Latin joke, the actual signature, and a postscript bow to the grandmother) that is characteristic of Chekhov’s letters home, not evidence of concatenation.

Content: Chekhov describes the rain-soaked start of the trip at Yaroslavl, the sunnier turn once under way, the steamer’s amenities (the water closet praised, the kitchen mocked with a phonetically misspelled menu), his fellow traveler Olga Kundasova and her mysterious errand, a stop in Kostroma/Plyos/Kineshma, and a run of instructions and greetings to family and household members – schoolbooks, a suitcase, a package to be sent, volumes of Gogol to be collected from Suvorin, greetings to the servants. It ends with his running joke identity as "Homo Sachaliensis" (a nod to the Sakhalin expedition he is en route to) and a bow to his grandmother.

Dateline note: both and have been normalized to the corpus’s pinned ‘D Month YYYY. City.‘ convention; the source’s informal second heading ("Пароход «Алекс. – literally "Steamer ’Alex. Nevsky.’ The 23rd, early morning.") is kept as written rather than forced into the full dateline form, since it is not a formal dateline but a resumption note.

My friends the Tunguses! Did you have rain when Ivan got back from the Lavra? In Yaroslavl such rain was pelting down that I had to put on a leather robe like a hermit’s. My first impression of the Volga was spoiled by the rain, the tear-streaked windows of the cabin, and Gurlyand’s wet nose – he came out to the station to meet me. In the rain Yaroslavl looks rather like Zvenigorod, and its churches call to mind the Pererva Monastery; there are a great many illiterate signs, it’s dirty, and jackdaws with big heads walk about on the pavement.
On board the steamer my first care was to give free rein to my talent, that is, I lay down to sleep. When I woke I beheld the sun. The Volga isn’t bad; water-meadows, monasteries flooded with sunlight, white churches; astonishing expanse; wherever you look, it’s a comfortable spot to sit down and start fishing. On the bank school-mistresses wander about nibbling the green grass, and now and then a shepherd’s horn is heard. White gulls hover over the water, looking like the younger Drishka.
The steamer isn’t much. The best thing on it is the water closet. It stands up high, with four steps under it, so that an inexperienced person like Ivanenko might easily mistake it for a royal throne. The worst thing on the steamer is the dinner. I report the menu with the spelling preserved: cabbage schoop, sassiges with cabbige, sturgeon fride, cat casserole – the "cat" turned out to be kasha. Since my money was earned by sweat and blood, I should have preferred things the other way round, that is, for the dinner to be better than the water closet, all the more since after Korneyev’s Santorini wine my whole insides gave way, and I shall manage without the water closet clear to Tomsk.
Travelling with me is Kundasova. Where she’s going and why, I have no idea. When I start questioning her about it she launches into some very hazy conjectures about someone who arranged to meet her in a ravine near Kineshma, then bursts into wild laughter and starts stamping her feet or drumming her elbow on whatever comes to hand, sparing no vein. We’ve passed Kineshma, and the ravines too, and still she goes on travelling, which of course I’m very glad of. By the way: yesterday, for the first time in my life, I watched her eat. She eats no less than other people, but mechanically, exactly as though she were chewing oats.
Kostroma is a good town. I saw Plyos, where the languid Levitan used to live; I saw Kineshma, where I strolled along the boulevard and observed the local dandies; I stopped in at a chemist’s there to buy some chlorate of potash for my tongue, which has gone morocco-leather from the Santorini wine. The chemist, catching sight of Olga Petrovna, was delighted and flustered, and she was too; the two of them evidently have known each other a long while, and, to judge by the conversation that passed between them, have more than once strolled through the ravines near Kineshma. So that’s where the dandies are! The chemist’s surname is Kopfer.
Rather cold and rather dull, but on the whole entertaining.
The steamer whistles every minute; its whistle is something between a donkey’s bray and an Aeolian harp. In five or six hours I’ll be in Nizhny. The sun is rising. I slept artistically through the night. My money is intact – that’s because I keep clutching at my stomach.
The tugboats are very handsome, hauling four or five barges behind them; it looks just as if a young, elegant man of refinement wanted to run off, and his wife – a sledgehammer of a woman – along with his mother-in-law, his sister-in-law, and his wife’s grandmother, were all holding him back by the coat-tails.
To Papasha and Mamasha a bow down to the ground; to all the rest, a bow from the waist. I hope Semashko, Lidia Stakhiyevna, and Ivanenko are behaving themselves. I’d be curious to know who’s going to carouse with Lidia Stakh till five in the morning now? Ah, how glad I am that Ivanenko has no money!
The suitcase Misha bought is coming apart at the seams. My thanks to you. My health is perfect. My neck doesn’t hurt. Yesterday I didn’t drink a single drop.
Take Fofanov’s book from Drishka. Give Kundasova the French atlas and Darwin’s travels standing on the shelf. That’s Ivan’s department.
The sun has hidden behind a cloud, it has turned overcast, and the broad Volga looks gloomy. Levitan oughtn’t to live on the Volga. It lays a gloom on the soul. Though it wouldn’t be at all bad to have a little estate of one’s own on its bank.
I wish you all everything good. Heartfelt greetings and a thousand bows.
Misha, teach Lidia Stakh how to send a registered parcel and give her the ticket for the Gogol. Remember that one volume of Gogol was returned to Suvorin as a binding sample. So three volumes are to be collected.
If the manservant had woken up I’d have demanded coffee, but as it is I have to drink water without any pleasure. Greetings to Maryushka and Olga.
Well, keep well and keep prospering. I shall write regularly.
