The Last of the Mohican Women

Последняя могиканша

Headnote

"The Last of the Mohican Women" appeared in 1884, during Chekhov’s most prolific years as a writer of comic sketches for the Moscow and Petersburg weeklies. The ironic title – borrowed from Cooper’s vanished tribe – casts its unwelcome visitor, the domineering landowner’s wife Olimpiada Yegorovna Khlykina, as a survivor of a dying breed: the petty provincial gentry who still police "station" and lineage as though rank alone were a form of character.

The story turns entirely on a single afternoon interruption. The narrator and his host, the idle retired officer Dokukin, are killing time in the deep boredom of a country house when Dokukin’s sister and her meek, endlessly badgered husband Dosifei Andreich arrive uninvited. What follows is a small comedy of humiliation staged in real time – Lenten dinners imposed on the household, a public dressing-down over trousers and posture, a marriage reduced to one partner’s relentless surveillance of the other. Dosifei, a former man of some spirit (he once "made speeches at meetings" and "invented a new seed-drill"), has been ground down into a cowed and grateful servant in his own household, a transformation Dokukin marks with the story’s most pointed line, calling him a "Bethlehem infant, slain by Herod."

Chekhov withholds commentary and lets the dialogue do the satire’s work, particularly Khlykina’s own speech, thick with the peasant-tinged sanctimony ("if you please to know, sir") of someone anxiously performing a gentility she does not quite trust herself to hold. It is a compact, broadly comic piece typical of the young Chekhonte’s early manner, but its household tyranny and its unhappy, watched husband anticipate darker domestic studies Chekhov would return to throughout his career.
