1 Yegor Ziberov, a
seventh-form gymnasium student, graciously extends his hand to Petya Udodov. Petya, a twelve-year-old boy in a gray little suit, plump and red-cheeked, with a low forehead and bristly hair, makes his bow and scrapes and climbs into the cupboard for his exercise books. The lesson begins.
2 By the terms agreed with Udodov senior, Ziberov is to work with Petya two hours a day, for which he receives
six rubles a month. He is preparing him for the second form of the gymnasium. (Last year he was preparing him for the first, but Petya cut himself on it.)
3 "Well now..." Ziberov begins, lighting a cigarette. "You were set the fourth declension. Decline fructus!"
4 Petya begins to decline.
5 "You haven’t learned it again!" says Ziberov, rising. "This is the sixth time I’ve given you the fourth declension, and you haven’t the faintest idea! When, finally, are you going to start learning your lessons?"
6 "Haven’t learned it again?" a coughing voice sounds beyond the door, and into the room comes Petya’s
papa, the retired
provincial secretary Udodov. "Again? Why haven’t you learned it? Ah, you pig, you pig! Would you believe it,
Yegor Alekseich? Why, I thrashed him only yesterday!"
7 And, sighing heavily, Udodov sits down beside
his son and peers into the battered
Kühner. Ziberov begins to examine Petya in front of his father. Let the foolish father learn how foolish his son is! The gymnasium student warms to the examiner’s sport, hates, despises the plump little red-cheeked dunce, is ready to strike him. It even vexes him when the boy happens to answer correctly – so thoroughly has this Petya come to disgust him!
8 "You don’t even know the second declension! Nor the first, for that matter! A fine way to study! Now tell me, what is the vocative of meus filius?"
9 "Of meus filius? Meus filius would be... it would be..."
– От meus filius? Meus filius будет...
10 Petya stares long at the ceiling, works his lips for a long while, but gives no answer.
11 "And what is the dative plural of dea?"
12 "Deabus... filiabus!" Petya snaps out.
– Deabus... filiabus! –
13 Old Udodov nods approvingly. The gymnasium student, who had not expected a successful answer, feels a stab of vexation.
14 "And what other noun takes abus in the dative?" he asks.
15 It turns out that "anima – soul" also takes abus in the dative, a fact not to be found in Kühner.
16 "A sonorous tongue, Latin!" Udodov remarks. "Alon... tron... bonus... anthropos... What wisdom! And all of it necessary, too," he says with a sigh.
17 "Hindering me, the brute, from working..." thinks Ziberov. "Sitting over my soul here, keeping watch. I can’t bear being watched!" – "Well now," he turns to Petya. "For next time you’ll take the same passage again in Latin. Now arithmetic... Get out your slate. What’s the next problem?"
18 Petya spits on the slate and wipes it with his sleeve. The teacher takes the problem book and dictates:
19 " ’A merchant bought 138
arshins of black and blue cloth for 540 rubles. Required: how many arshins of each did he buy, if the blue cost 5 rubles an arshin and the black 3 rubles?’ Repeat the problem."
20 Petya repeats the problem and, without a word, immediately sets about dividing 540 by 138.
21 "Now why are you dividing? Wait! Well, never mind – go on. Do you get a remainder? There can be no remainder here. Here, let me divide it!"
22 Ziberov divides, gets 3 with a remainder, and quickly rubs it out.
23 "Strange..." he thinks, ruffling his hair and reddening. "How does one solve it, then? Hm!.. This is a problem in indeterminate equations, not an arithmetic problem at all"...
24 The teacher looks at the answers and sees 75 and 63.
25 "Hm!.. strange... Add 5 and 3, then divide 540 by 8? Is that it? No, that’s not it either."
26 "Well, solve it!" he says to Petya.
27 "Well, what are you thinking about? It’s a trifling little problem!" Udodov says to Petya. "What a fool you are, my lad! You’d better solve it for him yourself, Yegor Alekseich."
28 Yegor Alekseich takes up the slate pencil and sets about solving it. He stammers, turns red, turns pale.
29 "This problem, properly speaking, is algebraic," he says. "It can be solved with an x and a y. Though it can be solved this way too. Here, you see, I’ve divided... you understand? Now, you see, we must subtract... you understand? Or, here’s what... Solve this problem yourself by tomorrow... Think it over..."
30 Petya smiles slyly. Udodov smiles too. Both of them understand the teacher’s confusion. The seventh-form student grows still more embarrassed, rises, and begins pacing from corner to corner.
31 "It can be solved without algebra too," says Udodov, reaching a hand toward the
abacus and sighing. "Here, if you please, watch..."
32 He clicks away on the abacus, and comes out with 75 and 63, which is exactly what was needed.
33 "There, sir... the unlearned way."
34 An unbearable dread comes over the teacher. With a sinking heart he glances at the clock and sees that an hour and a quarter still remains till the end of the lesson – a whole eternity!
35 "Now, dictation."
36 After the dictation – geography, after geography –
Scripture, then Russian grammar – so many sciences in this world! But at last the two-hour lesson comes to an end. Ziberov takes up his cap, graciously extends his hand to Petya, and takes his leave of Udodov.
37 "Might you give me a little money today?" he asks timidly. "Tomorrow I must pay my tuition fee. You owe me for six months now."
38 "Me? Ah, yes, yes..." Udodov mutters, not looking at Ziberov. "Gladly! Only I haven’t any just now – I’ll let you have it in a week... or two..."
39 Ziberov agrees and, pulling on his heavy, dirty galoshes, sets off for his next lesson.
