Salon de Varietes

Headnote

1 Salon de Varietes (“Салон де варьете” in the original) is an 1880 sketch from the very start of Chekhov’s career, written under the pseudonym “Antosha Chekhonte” for the Moscow comic press. It belongs to a genre the young Chekhov turned out at speed for a few kopecks a line: the physiologie, a rapid guided tour of a disreputable corner of city life, stitched together from overheard scraps of dialogue rather than a plotted narrative. Here the corner is a real one – a Moscow “café-chantant”-style variety hall of the kind that clustered around Bolshaya Dmitrovka street, offering cheap drink, a cancan, and a crowd of merchants’ sons, officers, German barmaids, and women for hire, all under one roof and one admission price.

The piece has almost no plot and needs none: it is a series of overheard fragments – a cab fare haggled, a quarrel between drunks, a merchant’s son fleeing his own father, a lonely German girl named Louise saving her wages to go home and marry Fritz – each one dropped as soon as it is picked up, the way an actual walk through such a hall would present them. The device recurs across Chekhov’s early “sketch” pieces of 1880–82: no single observer holds still long enough to become a character; the narrator is simply an eye moving through the crowd, occasionally addressing the reader directly (“you will see them here next year too”).

The comedy is the fast, broad kind of the earliest Chekhonte work – snatched insults, drinking dares, a shooting gallery, a German orchestra that plays badly – landing one beat after another with no space for reflection. But the narrator’s closing line turns the joke on the house itself: he would charge nothing to get in, and everything to get out. It is a young writer’s throwaway epigram, but it is also the first sign of the sourer eye that would later look at Russian provincial entertainment and find, under the noise, very little pleasure in it.

“Cabbie! Asleep, are you, devil take you! To the Salon de Varietes!”
“The Filthy Den, you mean? Thirty kopecks!”
The entrance, and the lone constable planted beside it, are lit by streetlamps. A ruble twenty to get in and twenty kopecks to check your coat (the latter, admittedly, not obligatory). You set your foot on the first step, and already you are hit by the heaviest reek of a cut-rate boudoir and bathhouse anteroom. Slightly tipsy patrons... A propos: don’t go to the Salon unless you are, well, not quite yourself. To be a little “in one’s cups” is more than obligatory. It is a principle. If a patron comes in smiling and blinking his oily little eyes, that is a good sign: he will not die of boredom, and may even taste a certain bliss. But woe to him if he is sober! He will not care for the Salon des Varietes, and having come home, he will thrash his children, so that when they are grown they will not go to the Salon either... The slightly tipsy patrons hobble up the staircase, hand their tickets to the doorman, enter a room hung with portraits of the great, stretch themselves, and plunge boldly into the whirl. Through every room they scurry back and forth, from door to door, those thirsting for strong sensations – they scurry, they crowd, they loiter from corner to corner as though searching for something... What a mixture of tribes, faces, colors, and smells! Ladies in red, blue, green, black, every color, motley, exactly like three-kopeck penny prints...
These ladies we saw here last year, and the year before that. You will see them here next year too. Not one has a low neckline: there is no dress for it, and... no bosom either. And what marvelous names: Blanche, Mimi, Fanny, Emma, Isabella, and... not one Matryona, not one Mavra, not one Palageya! The dust is frightful! Particles of rouge and powder, vapors of alcohol, hang suspended in the air... It is hard to breathe, and one wants to sneeze...

“How rude you are, sir!”
“Me, madam? Ah... hm... indeed! Permit me to put it to you plainly, that we understand your womanly notions very well indeed! Permit me to offer you my arm!”
“And why should I take it? First get acquainted... First stand me to something!”
An officer swoops down, takes the lady by the shoulders, and turns her back to the young man... The latter does not care for this... After thinking it over a moment, he flies into a temper, takes the lady by the shoulders, and turns her back to face himself...

Through the crowd shoves an enormous German with a dull, drunken face, suffering aloud from a belch for all to hear; behind him trots a small, pockmarked little man, pressing his hand...
“Eh... ech! Heck!”
“Most humbly obliged for that noble belch!” says the little man.
“’S nothing... Ech! Ech!”
Э... эк!
Near the entrance to the hall, a crowd... In the crowd two young merchants’ sons gesticulate zealously with their hands and hate each other. One is red as a lobster, the other pale. Both, naturally, are drunk as lords.
“And what if I give it you in the mmmug?”
“Ass!!”
“And what if... You’re the ass yourself! Philanthropist!!”
“Scum! What are you waving your hands for? Hit him! Go on, hit him!”
“Gentlemen!” comes a woman’s voice from the crowd. “Is this any way to curse, in front of ladies?”
“And the ladies can go to the devil! To hell with your ladies! I feed a thousand like them! You, Katka, don’t you meddle! Why’d he insult me? I never touched him!”
A dandy with an enormous necktie swoops down on the pale merchant’s son and seizes him by the arm.
“Mitya! Papa’s here!”
“Nno?..”
“I swear to God! Sitting at a table with Sonka! I very nearly caught his eye! The old devil... We have to go! Quick!!.”
Mitya casts one last piercing glance at his enemy, shakes his fist at him, and vanishes into the crowd...

“Tsvirintelkin! Get over there! Raisa’s looking for you!”
“The devil take her! I don’t want her! She looks like a latch-bolt... I’ve picked myself another lady... Louise!”
“What are you saying? That cannon?”
“That’s exactly the point, brother – a cannon. At least she’s a proper woman! You can’t get your arms around her!”
Fraulein Louise sits at a table. She is tall, stout, sweaty, and clumsy as a snail... In front of her on the table stand a bottle of beer and Tsvirintelkin’s cap... The lines of her corset stand out coarsely against her enormous back. How wise of her to hide her arms and legs! Her hands are large, red, and calloused. As recently as last year she was living in Prussia, where she scrubbed floors, made Biersuppe for her master the pastor, and minded the little Schmidts, Muellers, and Schultzes... But fate saw fit to disturb her peace: she fell in love with Fritz, and Fritz fell in love with her... But Fritz cannot marry a poor girl; he would call himself a fool if he married a poor girl! Louise swore Fritz eternal love and set off from her dear fatherland for the cold Russian steppes to earn her dowry... And now every evening she comes to the Salon. By day she makes little boxes and knits a tablecloth. When a certain sum has been put by, she will go back to Prussia and marry Fritz...
Vaterland).

Si vous n’avez rien a me dire...” – carries out from the hall...
– Si vous n’avez rien a me dire,
In the hall, uproar... They applaud whoever appears on stage, whoever it may be... The little cancan is meager, poor, but in the front rows there is drooling of pleasure... Look at the public when they bawl: “Down with the men!” Give the public a lever at such a moment, and they would turn the earth over! They shout, they bawl, they shriek...
“Shh... sh... sh...” – some little officer in the front rows hisses at some young lady...
The public protests the hissing furiously, and the whole of Bolshaya Dmitrovka shudders under the applause. The little officer rises, lifts his head high, and, with a great clatter and jingle, walks importantly out of the hall. He has upheld his dignity, evidently!..
The Hungarian orchestra thunders. What stubby little fellows all these Hungarians are, and how badly they play! They disgrace their Hungary!
Behind the bar stand Mr. Kuznetsov himself and a lady with black eyebrows; Mr. Kuznetsov pours the wine, the lady takes the money. The glasses are taken by storm.
“A glass of vodka! Listen here! Vodka!”
“Shall we, Kolya? Drink up, Mukhtar!”
A man with a close-cropped head stares dully at his glass, shrugs his shoulders, and swallows the vodka with a shudder of disgust.
“I can’t, Ivan Ivanych! I’ve got a weak heart!”
“Never mind! Nothing’ll happen to your weak heart from one drink!”
The young man with the weak heart drinks.
“Another glass!”
“No... I’ve got a weak heart. I’ve already had seven as it is.”
“Never mind!”
The young man drinks...

“Sir!” begs a girl with a pointed chin and rabbity little eyes, “stand me to supper!”
The man plays hard to get...
“I’m hungry! Just one portion...”
“She won’t let go... Waiter!”
A piece of meat is served... The girl eats, and – how she eats! She eats with her mouth, her eyes, her nose...
At the shooting gallery a fierce fusillade is under way... The Tyrolean girls, without a rest, keep loading the rifles... And a couple of the Tyrolean girls are not half bad... Off to one side stands an artist, sketching a Tyrolean girl on his cuff.
“Goodbye now... Be well!” cry the Tyrolean girls.
Two o’clock strikes... In the hall, dancing. Noise, uproar, shouting, squealing, cancan... A terrible closeness... Those already loaded reload again at the bar, and by three o’clock a proper chaos is under way.
In the private rooms...
But come, let’s be off! How pleasant the way out is! Were I the keeper of the Salon des Varietes, I would charge nothing for the entrance, and everything for the exit...
