The Lawyer Mother-in-Law

Headnote

"The Lawyer Mother-in-Law" ("Теща-адвокат") appeared in 1883, in the same brisk early stretch of Antosha Chekhonte’s output as the other short comic sketches of that year: a single scene, a single reversal, staged and dispatched in a page or two for a humor weekly’s readership.

The setup is a stock one — a mother-in-law descending on her new son-in-law a month after the wedding to plead her daughter’s cause — and Chekhov plays it for the reversal built into the title: she has come to argue Liza’s case against Michel’s supposed neglect, marshaling grievance after grievance (the books, the studying, the absence of balls) with the fluency of an advocate pleading a brief. Michel’s answer, that Liza herself prefers this life to the mother’s idea of one, seems to settle it — until the mother-in-law throws open the door on a Liza who has, in fact, been eavesdropping and crying, and who now sides with her mother in a single breath. The final exchange, in which neither husband nor wife can say which of them was the fool, is left exactly where Chekhov drops it.

The comic engine here is advocacy without conviction: the mother-in-law argues from a brief she may not fully believe, and Liza’s tearful volte-face undercuts the very independence Michel had just been praising in her. Chekhov gives no verdict on who has genuinely lost this argument, or whether Liza’s declared misery is real, staged, or some mixture the story does not pretend to sort out.

Two brief touches of the household’s aspirant, French-and-German-flecked gentility survive from the source and are worth noting for a reader meeting them cold: "Mutterchen" (a fond, mangled form of the German for "little mother," here used ironically of the mother-in-law) and the scattered French endearments and phrases ("mon petit, mon ange,ma chère,jour fixe" — a fixed at-home reception day) that mark the family’s pretensions to fashionable, cosmopolitan polish even as they squabble in a dressing gown over the breakfast cups.

It happened one fine morning, exactly a month after the wedding of Michel Puzyrev to Liza Mamunina. Michel had drunk his morning coffee and was looking around for his hat, to make his escape to the office, when his mother-in-law came into his study.
"I’ll keep you five minutes, Michel," she said. "Don’t frown, my friend... I know sons-in-law don’t like talking with their mothers-in-law, but we, it seems... we’ve come to understand each other, Michel. We’re not son-in-law and mother-in-law, we’re intelligent people... We have so much in common... isn’t that so?"
Mother-in-law and son-in-law sat down together on the sofa.
"What can I do for you, Mutterchen?"
Mutterchen).
"You’re an intelligent man, Michel, very intelligent; I too... am not stupid... We’ll understand one another, I hope. I’ve been meaning to speak with you for a long time, mon petit... Tell me frankly, for... for heaven’s sake, what is it you mean to do with my daughter?"
The son-in-law’s eyes went wide.
"I agree, you know... let it be! Why not? Learning’s a good thing, one can’t do without literature... it’s poetry, after all! I understand! It’s pleasant when a woman is educated... I was brought up myself, I understand... But why, mon ange, go to such extremes?"
"That is? I don’t quite understand you..."
"I don’t understand your relations with my Liza! You married her, but is she a wife to you, a companion? She’s your victim! Your sciences, your books, all these theories... they’re all very fine things, but, my friend, don’t forget, she’s my daughter! I won’t allow it! She’s my own flesh and blood! You’re killing her! Not a month has passed since your wedding, and she’s already thin as a splinter! She sits all day long over a book at your house, reading those foolish journals! Copying out papers of some kind! Is that a woman’s business? You don’t take her anywhere, you don’t let her live! She sees no society at your house, she doesn’t dance! It’s unheard of! Not once in all this time has she been to a ball! Not once!"
"She hasn’t been to a ball because she didn’t want to. Go and talk it over with her yourself... You’ll find out what she thinks of your balls and your dancing. No, ma chère! She can’t stand your idleness! If she sits for days on end over a book or over her work, believe me, no one is forcing her convictions on her... It’s for that very reason I love her... And now, I have the honor to take my leave, and I ask that in future you not interfere in our relations. Liza will speak for herself, if she ever has anything to say..."
"You think so? Can’t you see how meek and mute she’s become? Love has tied her tongue! If it weren’t for me, you’d have put a yoke on her, my dear sir! Yes, indeed! You’re a tyrant, a despot! Kindly change your behavior this very day!"
"I won’t even listen..."
"You won’t? Then never mind! Small honor in it! I wouldn’t have troubled to speak with you at all, if it weren’t for Liza! I’m sorry for her! She begged me to speak with you!"
"Now, that’s a lie... admit it, that’s simply a lie..."
"A lie? Then look, look for yourself, you coarse soul!"
The mother-in-law jumped up and wrenched at the door handle. The door flew open, and Michel saw his Liza. She was standing on the threshold, wringing her hands and sobbing. Her pretty little face was all in tears. Michel rushed to her...
"Did you hear that? Then tell her so yourself! Let her understand her own daughter!"
"Mama... Mama’s telling the truth," Liza wailed. "I can’t bear this life... I’m suffering..."
"Hm... So that’s it! Strange... But why haven’t you spoken to me about this yourself?"
"I... I... you’ll be angry..."
"But it was you yourself who was forever arguing against idleness! You used to say you loved me only for my convictions, that the life of your own circle was hateful to you! I loved you for that very reason! Before we were married you despised, you hated that vain, empty life! How is one to explain such a change?"
"Then I was afraid you wouldn’t marry me... Dear Michel! Let’s go to the jour fixe at Marya Petrovna’s tonight!..." And Liza fell on Michel’s chest.
"Well now, you see! Are you convinced now?" said the mother-in-law, and walked out of the study in triumph...
"Ah, you fool!" Michel groaned.
"Who’s a fool?" asked Liza.
"Whoever was wrong!.."
