Trichinae Without Sausages

Трихины без колбас

Headnote

"Trichinae Without Sausages" ("Трихины без колбас") is another of the one-line miniatures the nineteen-year-old Chekhov was placing in the Moscow comic weeklies in 1880, under "Antosha Ch." and the other early signatures. Only its tail end survives in the source staged here – a single clause, the back half of what was almost certainly a mock advertisement, in the same vein as the era’s classified notices and shopkeepers’ announcements that Chekhov liked to ventriloquize and tip half an inch off true.

The title trades on a live anxiety of the period: a series of trichinosis scares (the parasitic worm *Trichinella*, contracted from undercooked pork) had made "guaranteed free of trichinae" a selling point sausage-makers advertised outright, the way a shop today might advertise "organic" or "inspected." Chekhov’s title inverts the expected phrase – trichinae *without* the sausages they are supposed to come packaged in – and the surviving line plays it perfectly straight: a plain, deadpan retail notice, naming a real Moscow tradesman and a real street, Okhotny Ryad, the city’s old meat-and-game market just off the Kremlin. The address is doing the same work it does throughout these earliest pieces: concrete, verifiable Moscow topography lent to an absurd or impossible product, delivered without a flicker of comment.

Even reduced to a fragment, the piece is recognizably Chekhov’s method in embryo – the joke lives entirely in the gap between the solemn commercial register and what is actually, in this case grotesquely, being sold, and the prose never once breaks form to point that gap out.
