They Abolished It!

Упразднили!

Headnote

"They Abolished It!" ("Упразднили!") appeared in 1884, one of the brisk comic sketches Chekhov turned out for the humor weeklies under the pseudonym Antosha Chekhonte. It belongs to the vein of bureaucratic and rank-obsessed farce that runs through his early work: a story built entirely on the premise of Imperial Russia’s chin sistema, the elaborate ladder of civil and military ranks that told a subject exactly who he was and how the world was obliged to treat him.

The premise is a single absurd rumor let loose in the provinces. A visiting land surveyor casually mentions, over drinks, that the rank of ensign (praporshchik) has been abolished by decree. His host, a retired ensign named Vyvertov, is undone by the news – not because anything in his actual life has changed, but because the word that used to explain him to himself and to everyone else has apparently stopped applying. Chekhov then sends Vyvertov on a small odyssey through the local hierarchy – an archpriest stripped of his decorations, a major who insists he is no longer a major, a marshal of the nobility who refuses to be addressed as "excellency" – so that the rumor of abolished rank metastasizes into a vision of an entire social order dissolving from the top down, one title at a time.

The comedy is fast and mechanical, in the manner of the early sketches: the same beat – confusion, denial, a resigned wave of the hand – repeats station by station, each character absorbing the same blow that flattened the one before him, until Vyvertov himself starts to wonder whether the sun has been abolished too. But the piece ends on Chekhov’s characteristic double note. Grief curdles into stubbornness: Vyvertov resolves to sign a petition "ensign so-and-so," spelling the word out syllable by syllable, out of pure spite – a small, absurd, and oddly moving refusal to be erased by a rumor. Rank here is revealed as a fiction everyone has agreed to live inside, and the story’s real subject is what a man clings to when the fiction wavers.
