A Fairground "Total"

"A Fairground \"Total a one-page found-document sketch from 1884, written during Chekhov’s densest years as a contributor to the Moscow comic weeklies. The premise is a single line of frame narration: a merchant of the first guild returns from the great Nizhny Novgorod fair, and his wife empties his pockets to find a fistful of torn, half-illegible scraps of paper. What follows is not a story in the ordinary sense but the scraps themselves, transcribed exactly as damage and loss have left them – broken off mid-sentence, resuming after gaps the narrator marks with a row of dots.

The scraps add up to a comic ledger of one debauched fair-week: a lawyer’s demand letter on behalf of an actor the merchant apparently beat and now owes compensation; the actor’s own blustering follow-up, needling the merchant for his ignorance while haggling his price down; a bill for a smashed mirror and ruined piano at a restaurant; medical instructions for treating bruises; a feldsher’s invoice for cupping-glasses administered during a bout of delirium tremens; a note arranging a fresh spree with musicians and women; a dispute over a promissory note and a hint of bankruptcy proceedings; and, last, a friend’s note urging the merchant not to let a lawsuit over the beating drop. Arranged end to end, the fragments narrate an entire arc of violence, debt, and self-indulgence without a single sentence of the narrator’s own commentary – the "total" of the title is both the merchant’s fairground reckoning and the story’s own method of addition.

The piece belongs to the same family of "found document" miniatures Chekhov produced by the score in these years – notices, price lists, ledgers, letters – where the comedy is entirely procedural and the moral is left for the reader to tally. The gaps marked by ellipses are original to the source text, standing for the torn and illegible portions of the paper itself; they are part of the joke, not an editorial omission.
