The Mirror

Headnote

1 "The Mirror" (1885) is one of Chekhov’s early experiments with dissolving the boundary between waking narration and dream-vision. Nelly, the young, marriage-obsessed daughter of a landowner-general, falls into a trance before her New Year’s Eve mirror and sees her entire future unfold in a single unbroken hallucination: a hasty midnight ride to fetch a half-delirious country doctor for her sick husband, decades of quiet financial anxiety over a mortgaged estate, the deaths that must come to any family of small children, and finally her husband’s death and funeral. She wakes to find only a few seconds have passed and one of her two mirrors has slipped from her hands.

2 The story is a compact anticipation of themes Chekhov would return to throughout his career – the earned, unglamorous unhappiness of rural marriage, the inadequacy of provincial medicine, and the gap between romantic anticipation and lived reality – compressed here into a single girl’s fainting-fit of prophecy. Structurally it is unusual for early Chekhov in its use of continuous interior vision rather than dialogue-driven scene-setting, prefiguring the more psychologically inward stories of his maturity.

3 No ethnic or religious slurs appear in the source. The story reflects ordinary period-typical class relations (a servant addressing her mistress deferentially, a landowning family’s casual assumption of a doctor’s availability) and a resigned, matter-of-fact expectation of child mortality ("of five or six little ones, surely one will die") that is a demographic reality of the setting rather than an authorial editorial; it is preserved as written.

New Year’s Eve. Nelly, the young and pretty daughter of a landowner-general, who dreams day and night of marriage, sits in her room and gazes into a mirror with tired, half-closed eyes. She is pale, tense, and motionless, like the mirror itself.
A nonexistent but visible perspective, like a narrow, endless corridor, a row of countless candles, the reflection of her face, her hands, the mirror frame – all this has long since been veiled in mist and merged into one boundless gray sea. The sea stirs, flickers, now and then flares up with a glow...
Looking at Nelly’s motionless eyes and open mouth, it is hard to tell whether she is asleep or awake, but nonetheless she sees. At first she sees only a smile and the soft, charming expression of someone’s eyes; then, against the wavering gray background, the outlines of a head gradually grow clear – a face, eyebrows, a beard. It is he, her betrothed, the object of her long dreaming and hoping. For Nelly the betrothed is everything: the meaning of life, personal happiness, a career, her fate. Outside of him, as on the gray background, there is only darkness, emptiness, senselessness. And so it is no wonder that, seeing before her a handsome, gently smiling head, she feels a delight, an inexpressibly sweet nightmare that cannot be conveyed in words or on paper. Further, she hears his voice, sees herself living with him under one roof, sees her life gradually merging with his. Against the gray background months, years go rushing by... and Nelly sees her future clearly, in every detail.
Against the gray background pictures flash by, one after another. Now Nelly sees herself, on a cold winter night, knocking at the door of the district doctor, Stepan Lukich. Beyond the gate an old dog barks lazily and hoarsely. The doctor’s windows are dark. All around is silence.
"For God’s sake... for God’s sake!" Nelly whispers.
But now at last the gate creaks, and Nelly sees before her the doctor’s cook.
"Is the doctor home?"
"He’s asleep, miss..." the cook whispers into her sleeve, as though afraid of waking her master. "He’s only just got back from the epidemic. He’s not to be woken."
But Nelly does not hear the cook. Pushing her aside with her hand, she runs, like one gone mad, into the doctor’s quarters. Rushing through several dark and stuffy rooms, knocking over two or three chairs along the way, she at last finds the doctor’s bedroom. Stepan Lukich lies in his bed, dressed but without his coat, and, pursing his lips, breathes onto the palm of his hand. A night-light glows faintly beside him. Without a word, Nelly sits down on a chair and begins to weep. She weeps bitterly, her whole body trembling.
"My... my husband is ill!" she manages to say.
– My...
Stepan Lukich says nothing. He slowly raises himself, props his head on his fist, and looks at his visitor with sleepy, unmoving eyes.
"My husband is ill!" Nelly goes on, holding back her sobs. "For God’s sake, come at once... Quickly... as quickly as you can!"
"Eh?" the doctor mumbles, blowing on his palm.
"Come! This very minute! Otherwise... otherwise... it’s too dreadful to say... For God’s sake!"
And Nelly, pale and exhausted, swallowing her tears and gasping for breath, begins to describe to the doctor her husband’s sudden illness and her own unspeakable fear. Her suffering would move a stone, but the doctor only looks at her, blows on his palm, and does not stir.
"I’ll come tomorrow..." he mutters.
"That’s impossible!" Nelly cries in fright. "I know my husband has... typhus! You’re needed now... this very minute!"
"I’m, you see... I’ve only just got back..." the doctor mutters. "Three days out on the epidemic. I’m worn out, and sick myself... I absolutely cannot! Absolutely! I... I’ve caught it myself... Here!"
And the doctor thrusts a fever thermometer up to Nelly’s eyes.
"My temperature’s heading for forty... I absolutely cannot! I... I can’t even sit up. Forgive me: I’ll lie down..."
The doctor lies down.
"But I beg you, doctor!" Nelly moans in despair. "I implore you! Help me, for God’s sake. Gather all your strength and come... I’ll pay you, doctor!"
"My God... but I’ve already told you! Ah!"
Nelly springs up and paces the bedroom nervously. She longs to explain to the doctor, to make him understand... She thinks that if only he knew how dear her husband was to her, and how wretched she was, he would forget his exhaustion and his illness. But where is she to find the words?
"Go to the district doctor..." she hears Stepan Lukich’s voice.
"That’s impossible!... He lives twenty-five versts from here, and time is precious. And the horses won’t hold out: it’s forty versts from us to here, and almost as far again from here to the district doctor... No, it’s impossible! Come, Stepan Lukich! I’m asking you for an act of heroism. Well, perform this act of heroism! Have mercy!"
"The devil knows what... My head’s on fire, I’m out of my mind, and she doesn’t understand. I can’t! Leave me be."
"But you’re obliged to go! You cannot refuse to go! It’s pure selfishness! A man must sacrifice his life for his neighbor, and you... you refuse to go!... I’ll take you to court!"
Nelly feels that she is uttering an insulting and undeserved lie, but to save her husband she is capable of forgetting logic, and tact, and compassion for others alike... In answer to her threat the doctor greedily drinks a glass of cold water. Nelly begins again to plead, to appeal to his pity, like the lowliest beggar... At last the doctor gives in. He slowly rises, puffing and groaning, and looks about for his coat.
"Here it is, your coat!" Nelly helps him. "Let me put it on you... There. Let’s go. I’ll pay you... I’ll be grateful to you all my life..."
But what an ordeal! Having put on his coat, the doctor lies down again. Nelly lifts him up and drags him into the hall... In the hall there follows a long, agonizing struggle with galoshes and fur coat... His cap has vanished... But at last Nelly is seated in the carriage. The doctor beside her. Now there remains only to travel forty versts, and her husband will have medical help. Darkness hangs over the earth: not a hand’s breadth can be seen... A cold winter wind blows. Frozen ruts jolt beneath the wheels. Every so often the driver stops and ponders which road to take...
Nelly and the doctor are silent the whole way. They are jolted terribly, yet they feel neither the cold nor the jolting.
"Drive on! Drive on!" Nelly begs the driver.
By five in the morning the exhausted horses turn into the yard. Nelly sees the familiar gate, the well with its sweep, the long row of stables and sheds... At last she is home.
"Wait, I’ll be right back..." she says to Stepan Lukich, settling him on the sofa in the dining room. "Rest a little, and I’ll go and see how he is."
Returning a minute later from her husband, Nelly finds the doctor lying down. He lies on the sofa, muttering something.
"Please, doctor... Doctor!"
"Eh? Ask Domna..." Stepan Lukich mutters.
"What?"
"At the assembly they were saying... Vlasov was saying... Who? What?"
And Nelly, to her utter horror, sees that the doctor is delirious, just like her husband. What is she to do?
"To the district doctor!" she decides.
Then again come the darkness, the sharp, cold wind, the frozen ruts. She suffers in body and in soul, and to pay for these sufferings deceitful nature has no means, no deceptions enough...
Further she sees, against the gray background, how every spring her husband goes searching for money to pay the interest to the bank where the estate is mortgaged. He does not sleep, nor does she, and both of them, their minds aching, think how to avoid a visit from the court bailiff.
She sees her children. There is the eternal fear of chills, scarlet fever, diphtheria, poor marks, separation. Of five or six little ones, surely one will die.
The gray background is not free of deaths. That much is understandable. Husband and wife cannot die at the same time. One of the two must, no matter what, outlive the other’s funeral. And Nelly sees her husband dying. This terrible misfortune presents itself to her in every detail. She sees the coffin, the candles, the deacon, and even the tracks the undertaker left in the hall.
"What for? To what end?" she asks, staring blankly into her dead husband’s face.
And their whole life together now seems to her nothing but a foolish, needless preface to this death.
Something falls from Nelly’s hands and strikes the floor. She starts, jumps up, and opens her eyes wide. One mirror, she sees, lies at her feet; the other still stands on the table as before. She looks into the mirror and sees a pale, tear-stained face. The gray background is gone.
"I believe I fell asleep..." she thinks, sighing lightly.
