1 (A story of eyewitnesses)
2 When the waiter had listed for him the few dishes to be had at the tavern, he thought it over and said:
3 “In that case give us two portions of cabbage soup with fresh cabbage, and a chicken, and ask your master whether you happen to have any red wine here...”
4 Then everyone saw him look up at the ceiling and say, turning to the waiter:
5 “Astonishing, how many flies you have here!”
6 We say “he” because neither the waiters, nor the master, nor the patrons of the tavern knew who he was, of what rank, where from, or why he had come to our town. He was a solid, already rather elderly gentleman, decently dressed and, apparently, of good intentions. By his dress one might even have taken him for an aristocrat. We noticed on him a gold watch, a pin with a pearl in it, and in his beaver hat lay gloves with fashionable clasps, of the kind we had seen before only on the vice-governor. As he dined he tried the whole time to dazzle us with his good breeding: he held his fork in his left hand, wiped himself with his napkin, and winced whenever a fly fell into the glasses. Everyone knows that where there are flies, the crockery cannot be clean: to say nothing of ordinary patrons, even such persons as the
police captain, the
district police officer, and passing landowners, dining at the tavern, never complain when they are served a plate or a glass fouled by flies; but he would not eat until the waiter had washed the plates in hot water. Evidently he was putting on airs and trying to appear more high-born than he really was.
7 When his cabbage soup was brought to him, another equally unfamiliar person came up to his table – bald, clean-shaven, and wearing gold spectacles. This new gentleman was dressed in a silk suit and likewise had a gold watch. The whole time he spoke French, and examined the dishes and the patrons with curiosity, so that it was not hard to recognize him as a foreigner. Who he was, where from, and why he had graced our town, we did not know either. Having eaten the first spoonful of cabbage soup, he – that is, the one with the pearl pin – shook his head and said mockingly:
8 “These blockheads manage to give even fresh cabbage the smell of carrion. It’s impossible to eat. Listen, my good man, do you all really live like pigs here? In the whole town one can’t get a passably decent bowl of cabbage soup. It’s astonishing!”
9 Then he began saying something in French to his foreigner companion. Of his speech we remember only the word “cochon” “pig” (French).. Having fished a cockroach out of the soup, he turned to the waiter and said:
10 “I did not ask for soup with cockroaches. Blockhead.”
11 “Sir,” answered the waiter, “it wasn’t I who put him in the soup, he got in there himself. And you needn’t trouble yourself: cockroaches don’t bite.”
12 Having demanded, after the chicken, a sheet of paper and a pencil, he began drawing some sort of circles and writing numbers. The foreigner disagreed and argued with him for a long time, shaking his head in sign of disagreement. The sheet, covered with circles and figures, is kept to this day by the master of the tavern; the district schools inspector, to whom the master showed this sheet, looked long at the circles, then sighed and said: “The waters above the firmament are dark indeed!” Settling up for the meal, he – that is, the one who had the pearl in his necktie – gave the waiter a new five-
ruble note. Whether this note was genuine or counterfeit we do not know, since it did not occur to us to examine it.
13 “Listen, at what hour in the morning do you open the tavern?” he asked the waiter.
14 “At sunrise.”
15 “Excellent. Tomorrow at five in the morning we shall come to drink tea. Have a portion ready, only without flies. And do you know what will happen tomorrow morning?” he asked, winking slyly.
16 “No, sir.”
17 “Ah! Tomorrow morning you will be struck with astonishment and bewilderment.”
18 Having thus made his threat, he, laughing, said something to the foreigner and went out of the tavern together with him. Both of them spent the night at the house of
Marfa Yegorovna, a solitary, pious widow, who is not in the least to blame and could not have been an accomplice. Now she weeps the whole time, fearing that she will be taken away. Knowing her turn of mind, we affirm that she is not guilty. Besides, judge for yourselves: could she, in taking in lodgers, possibly have known beforehand what thoughts were in their heads?
19 The next day, in the morning, at exactly five o’clock, the strangers were already at the tavern. This time they had come with portfolios, books, and some cases of strange shape. In their speech and movements agitation and haste were noticeable. He – that is, the one who was not the foreigner – said:
20 “A cloud is coming up from the northwest. If only it doesn’t get in our way!”
21 Having drunk a glass of tea, he called the master of the tavern and ordered him to set out a table and two chairs beside the tavern, on the square. The master, an uneducated man, though he sensed something amiss, carried out the order all the same. The strangers gathered up their belongings and, going out of the tavern, sat down on the chairs by the table. They settled themselves in the middle of the square before all the people – how foolish that was! Talking about something between themselves, they laid out on the table papers, diagrams, dark glasses, and some sort of tubes. When the master timidly approached them and bent down over the table, he – that is, the one with the pearl – pushed him away with his hand and said:
22 “Don’t poke your fat nose where it doesn’t belong.”
23 Then he glanced at his watch and, having said something to the foreigner, began looking at the sun through the dark glass. The foreigner took up one of the tubes and began looking in the same direction... Soon after this a terrible misfortune occurred, the like of which had never been seen before. We all suddenly began to notice that the sky and the earth were growing dark, as before an approaching storm. When the foreigner set down the tube and, having quickly written something, picked up the dark glass, we heard someone shout:
24 “Gentlemen, the sun is being covered over!”
25 Indeed, something black, very like a frying
pan, was moving across the sun and screening it from the earth. Seeing that already half the sun was gone, and that the strangers were still carrying on with their strange doings, some of us turned to
the constable Vlasov and said to him:
26 “Constable, why do you pay no attention to this disorder?”
27 He answered:
28 “The sun is not in my district.”
29 Thanks to such negligence on the part of the local authorities, we soon saw that the whole sun had vanished. Night fell, and where the day had gone, no one knew. Stars appeared in the sky. From this untimely coming of night the following events took place in our town. All of us were dreadfully frightened and fell into confusion. Not knowing what to do, we ran about the square in terror and, jostling one another, cried out: “Constable! Constable!” Cows, bulls, and horses (at that time we were having the cattle fair), their tails raised and bellowing, dashed about the town in fright, terrifying the inhabitants. Dogs howled. The bedbugs in the tavern’s rooms, imagining that night had come, crawled out of the cracks and set about stinging the sleepers.
deacon-panihida/">The deacon Fantasmagorsky, who at that moment was bringing cucumbers home from his kitchen garden, took fright, leapt from his cart, and hid under the bridge, while his horse drove the cart into a stranger’s yard, where the cucumbers were eaten by pigs.
The excise official Lstetsov, who had not spent the night at home but at a neighbor woman’s (in the interests of justice we cannot conceal this detail), ran out into the street in nothing but his underclothes and, rushing into the crowd, cried out in a wild voice:
30 “Save yourselves, whoever can!”
31 Many ladies, awakened by the noise, ran out into the street without even putting on their shoes. Much else took place besides, which we shall venture to relate only behind closed doors. The only ones who were not frightened and kept their presence of mind were the firemen, who at that time were fast asleep, as we hasten to attest. All this took place on the morning of
the seventh of August.
32 The strangers, having thus made a mess of things, packed their papers into their portfolios and, when the sun appeared again, got into a carriage and drove off, no one knows where. Who they were we do not know to this day. We report their description. He, that is, the one with the pearl pin: of middling height, clean-shaven face, moderate chin, wrinkles on the brow; the foreigner: of middling height, stout of build, face shaven and clean, moderate chin, from a distance resembling
the landowner Karasevich; nearsighted, which is why he wears spectacles.
33 Are these not Austrian spies?
