Paschal Canon

Paschal canon

also: пасхальный канон

The great hymn (traditionally attributed to St. John of Damascus) sung at the heart of Orthodox Easter Matins, proclaiming the Resurrection in soaring imagery across nine odes; Nikolai loved it above all other sacred writing, and its actual text is quoted, unrecognized by the narrator, near the story's end.
