Free settlement (na poselenii)

free settlement

After completing or in lieu of a katorga term, exiles were commonly settled as free colonists in Siberia, formally registered with a local peasant community and in principle entitled to a land allotment -- the legal machinery underlying the tramp's fantasy of a homestead, livestock, and family.
