Church Parish School

parish school

also: церковноприходская школа

A tserkovno-prikhodskaya shkola, a basic rural elementary school placed under the authority of the local Orthodox clergy rather than the secular zemstvo, part of a state policy (formalized by statute in 1884) expanding church-run education as a conservative counterweight to zemstvo schools; parish priests were expected to help staff and support such schools, often from their own scant means.
