An elderly, gentle, endlessly cheerful village priest who travels with Kuzmichov and Yegorushka across the steppe in "The Steppe." In this letter Chekhov tells Pleshcheev, who had evidently asked after the novella's characters, that "silly old Father Christopher has already died" -- a piece of the story's future Chekhov had in mind for Yegorushka's continuation. A fictional character, not a real clergyman.
