Nina Fyodorovna's handsome, vain, self-regarding husband, a former landowner turned provincial official who ran through both his own and his wife's fortunes, kept a second household openly in the same town, and explains every subject -- cancer, electricity, love -- with confident, invented pseudo-science; he is largely indifferent to Nina's death, propositions Yulia on a train shortly after his wife is buried, and later reappears in Moscow soliciting Laptev for money on behalf of his second family.
