also: the eternal student
A perpetual university student living on his parents' small remittances, nicknamed "the eternal student" for having spent years drifting between faculties without graduating; mild, tediously talkative, and endlessly willing to run other people's errands badly, he becomes a fixture of the Laptevs' evenings and is still waiting, at the novella's later chapters, for them to find him a post.
