A shrewd, ubiquitous sheep-and-wool magnate who is spoken of and glimpsed throughout "The Steppe" but never fully met -- everyone on the road seems to be looking for him or reporting his movements. In this letter Chekhov tells Pleshcheev that "Varlamov keeps on whirling about," continuing the character's restless, almost legendary presence from the novella. A fictional character, distinct from the real historical composer and the actor.
